ORONO – Chris Bruff scored six of his career-high 26 points in overtime and Maine rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half to beat Vermont 85-82 on Sunday.
Ernest Turner added 17 points for Maine (6-10, 1-4 America East), including two free throws after Vermont coach Mike Lonergan was charged with a technical foul late in overtime.
Chris Holm led Vermont (7-8, 3-2) with a career-high 24 points and Mike Trimboli added 23.
Maine closed the first half with a 12-5 run to cut the Catamounts’ lead to 36-32.
The Black Bears tied the score early in the second half and took a lead before Vermont answered with a 12-0 run to regain a double-digit lead.
St. Joe’s 58, MMA 55
STANDISH – Noah LaRoche scored 18 points, including two critical free throws with 11 seconds to play, to send St. Joseph’s to a 58-55 victory over Maine Maritime Academy.
The visitors led by as many as 16 points in the first half, but the Monks cut Maine Maritime’s lead to 25-23 by halftime. The second half featured four ties and five lead changes.
Marc McCorrison led the Mariners with 12 points and Ben Dunlap added 11 points.
Women’s hoop
Vermont 73, Maine 60
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Alexis Castro scored a career-high 34 points Sunday to spark Vermont to a 73-60 triumph over Maine in women’s basketball action.
Castro scored Vermont’s first seven points and 12 of its first 17 to help the Catamounts take an early 17-8 lead. After the lead grew to 11 point, Maine went on a 16-2 run to take a 32-28 advantage, but Vermont answered with a 10-2 spurt to close the half.
With the Black Bears leading 42-40 on consecutive baskets by Katie Whittier and Bracey Barker, Vermont scored the next 14 points, from which Maine never recovered.
Ashley Underwood led Maine with 22 points and Abby Schrader chipped in with 16.
UMF 76, Wheelock 31
BOSTON – UMaine-Farmington used a 27-8 run in the first half to quickly pull away for a 76-31 win over Wheelock.
Kari Simpson led UMF with 18 points and added seven boards, three blocks and four assists in 17 minutes.
MMA 57, St. Joe’s 39
STANDISH – Alyssa Burns scored 16 points as Maine Maritime snapped St. Joseph’s three-game winning streak with an easy 57-39 victory.
The Monk’s lone lead came on Brittany Rauscher’s 3-pointer to open the scoring.
