MORA, Sweden (AP) – Ottawa Senators right wing Marian Hossa is switching European teams during the NHL lockout.
Hossa, the Senators’ leading scorer last season, signed with Mora of the Swedish Elite League. He will join younger brother Marcel and Slovakian countryman Rastislav Pavlikovsky on the team. He started this season with Dukla Trencin in Slovakia.
“Naturally, it helped that both Marcel and Rastislav play for us,” Mora director Jan Simons said. “I think that those three players want to prove something on the ice.”
Another Ottawa player, Martin Havlat, joined the Russian league Wednesday, leaving Znojmo of the Czech league for Moscow Dynamo.
About one-third of the NHL’s estimated 750 players have joined European teams during the lockout. Most have contract clauses allowing them to return if the lockout ends.
Hossa is expected to work out with his new team Monday and play his first game three days later against Modo, led by seven-time NHL All-Star Peter Forsberg of Sweden. The contract expires Jan. 31, but Simons said there could be an extension.
Hossa had 36 goals and 46 assists for the Senators last year and shared fifth place in the NHL scoring race. He had 17 goals and 13 assists in 19 games with Dukla Trencin.
Mora, sixth in the 12-team league, also features Edmonton Oilers forwards Shawn Horcoff and Daniel Cleary.
Havlat most likely will play his first game for his Russian club next week. It’s believed Dynamo will pay Havlat $1.2 million for the rest of the season.
At Dynamo, Havlat will join Detroit Red Wings star center Pavel Datsyuk as the Russian league continues to load up on top NHL talent. AK Bars Kazan leads the way with 11 NHL players.
