PHILADELPHIA – Brett Tomko allowed one run in six innings for his first win in nearly a month and helped San Francisco complete a three-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies with a 3-1 victory Sunday.
Tomko (6-6) allowed four hits, giving up his only run on Bobby Abreu’s sixth-inning homer. He had been 0-1 in five starts since beating Arizona on July 19.
Scott Eyre pitched 1 2-3 innings, and Jim Brower got Placido Polanco to fly out in the eighth. Dustin Hermanson finished for his third save since becoming the San Francisco closer.
While the Giants entered one game behind Chicago in the NL wild-card race, Philadelphia was 4 games behind the Cubs. The Phillies lost for the sixth time in seven games.
Dodgers 8, Cubs 5
CHICAGO – Adrian Beltre and Shawn Green homered, and Steve Finley hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied for an 8-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
Milton Bradley drove in two runs in the eighth for the Dodgers, who held on to a 6-game lead in the NL West.
Corey Patterson hit a two-run homer, and Ramon Martinez and Michael Barrett each hit solo shots for Chicago, which dropped into a tie with San Diego in the NL wild-card race.
Trailing 5-3 in the eighth, the Dodgers scored five runs against Chicago’s bullpen, spoiling a strong start by Mark Prior.
Prior allowed three runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings. He struck out a season-high nine batters and walked two.
Diamondbacks 2, Mets 0
NEW YORK – Randy Johnson took a four-hitter into the ninth inning to help the Arizona Diamondbacks end a nine-game losing streak Sunday, beating Steve Trachsel and the New York Mets 2-0.
Luis Terrero had an RBI single in the sixth and Johnson matched a season high with 14 strikeouts as Arizona won for just the fourth time in 26 road games.
In a matchup of contrasting styles, the overpowering Johnson outpitched the finicky Trachsel through a steady but light rain.
Astros 5, Expos 4
MONTREAL – Pinch-hitter Orlando Palmeiro singled home the go-ahead run to cap a three-run rally in the ninth inning, and the Houston Astros beat Montreal 5-4 Sunday to end the Expos’ winning streak at a season-high seven.
Montreal led 4-2 when Jeff Kent and Michael Lamb hit consecutive one-out singles to chase Livan Hernandez, who had allowed Carlos Beltran’s two-run homer in the first.
Jason Lane hit a run-scoring single off Luis Ayala (4-8), and Jose Vizcaino tied the score with a groundout to shortstop.
Palmeiro then singled to drive in the go-ahead run. Houston had been 0-51 when trailing after eight innings.
Pirates 3, Rockies 0
PITTSBURGH – Craig Wilson had three hits and two RBIs, and Josh Fogg pitched six innings to win for the first time in eight starts since July 2 and lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Colorado Rockies 3-0 Sunday.
The game was interrupted by a fourth-inning fight that led to the ejections of Colorado starting pitcher Joe Kennedy and Pirates catcher Jason Kendall.
Fogg (7-8) allowed four hits, struck out five and walked two, escaping a bases-loaded jam in the sixth when left fielder Jason Bay made a diving catch on Matt Holliday’s sinking liner.
Kennedy’s 0-1 pitch glanced off the protective pad Kendall wears on his left upper arm. Kendall dropped his bat and started toward first base. Kennedy stepped off the mound and appeared to say something to Kendall, which caused Kendall to turn and charge the pitcher.
Padres 7, Reds 2
CINCINNATI – Adam Eaton allowed two runs in the first inning but kept Cincinnati scoreless over the next five, and also drove in two runs in the San Diego Padres’ 7-2 victory over the Reds on Sunday.
Eaton (8-10) gave up eight hits and one walk with eight strikeouts in six innings, and went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two runs scored and a sacrifice bunt.
He doubled and scored the go-ahead run on Khalil Greene’s two-run single that gave San Diego a 3-2 lead in the second inning. Eaton also greeted reliever John Riedling with a bases-loaded, two-run double down the left-field line in the sixth as the Padres opened up a 5-2 lead.
Marlins 5, Brewers 3
MILWAUKEE – Luis Castillo tied the score with a ninth-inning single, and pinch-hitter Damion Easley hit a two-run double in the 10th inning that led the Florida Marlins over the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3.
Doug Davis pitched seven shutout innings for Milwaukee, which took a 3-0 lead against World Series MVP Josh Beckett before Miguel Cabrera homered off Matt Wise in the eighth.
Alex Gonzalez reached on an error by second baseman Bill Hall leading off the ninth, Juan Pierre stopped an 0-for-18 slide with a one-out RBI triple off Dan Kolb and Castillo bounced a single over a drawn-in infield.
Beckett, 0-4 in seven starts since beating Houston on May 20, allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.
Beckett, who has been on the disabled list three times year, struck out five and walked three.
Davis tied his career high with nine strikeouts and allowed five hits. He was trying for his 11th win, which would match his high in a season.
Russell Branyan homered on Beckett’s first pitch of the second inning, a 458-foot drive to center that hit just below the “5” inning marker on the scoreboard. It was the fourth-longest homer in Miller Park history. Branyan also has the longest, a 480-foot drive off Chicago’s Greg Maddux on July 27.
Hall hit an RBI single with two outs in the fourth. Branyan, who has four homers in 33 at-bats with the Brewers, doubled to lead off the sixth, took third on a throwing error by Encarnacion in right and scored on Geoff Jenkins’ single.
Notes: Milwaukee optioned LHP Jorge de la Rosa to Triple-A Indianapolis before the game to make room for Hendrickson. De la Rosa made his major league debut Saturday night against the Marlins, giving up four runs and six hits in five innings. … LHP Mike Kusiewicz, a Class A pitcher for Milwaukee, is on Canada’s Olympic team.
