SAN FRANCISCO – A.J. Pierzynski hit a tiebreaking, two-run single and also had a triple among his three hits in the San Francisco Giants’ 6-3 win over the Florida Marlins on Saturday.

Pierzynski was criticized anonymously by several teammates in recent days for his work ethic and it showed up in a newspaper Friday. It appears to have motivated the fiery catcher, who pumped his fist when he stepped on first base following his seventh-inning single.

Jason Schmidt (2-2) struck out nine in seven innings and earned his second win this week. Matt Herges got four outs for his ninth save in 10 chances.

Astros 10, Reds 4

HOUSTON – Jeff Kent drove in four runs and the Houston Astros had 16 hits in a 10-4 rout of the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.

Richard Hidalgo went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Wade Miller allowed three runs on two hits over six innings in the Astros’ third straight win.

Miller (3-2) struck out seven and walked six in improving to 7-1 against the Reds, who have lost four in a row.

The Astros roughed up starter Aaron Harang (2-1), who allowed four runs on 10 hits in just 4 1-3 innings.

Rockies 3, Braves 2

DENVER – Mark Sweeney’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning drove in the go-ahead run, and the Colorado Rockies ended a seven-game losing streak to the Atlanta Braves with a 3-2 win in the first game of a split doubleheader Saturday.

Vinny Castilla drew a bases-loaded walk from Mike Hampton in the fifth to tie it in Colorado’s first win over Atlanta since Aug. 18, 2002. Vladimir Nunez (3-0) worked a scoreless eighth for the win.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 2

ST. LOUIS – Matt Clement worked eight strong innings and Aramis Ramirez hit a three-run home run, giving the Chicago Cubs a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.

The Cubs won for only the sixth time in their last 32 games at Busch Stadium over a five-season span. A sellout crowd of 49,505, the largest of the season, attended a game that was played in constant rain and temperatures in the high 40’s.

D-backs 6, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA – Pinch-hitter Carlos Baerga hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the sixth inning, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night.

Danny Bautista went 0-for-3 with two sacrifice flies, ending his 21-game hitting streak. Randy Johnson (3-2) allowed three runs – one earned – and four hits in five innings to win his second straight start.

Pirates 8, Brewers 7

MILWAUKEE – Craig Wilson hit an RBI double in the 10th inning to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 8-7 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night.

Jason Kendall led off the inning with a single off Luis Vizcaino (0-1) and stole second and third to get into scoring position.

With two outs, Wilson lined a double to center field to score Kendall for his third RBI of the game.
