The move could signal the team is about to part ways with Ty Law.
FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) – Free agent cornerback Jeff Burris signed a one-year contract with New England amid the Patriots’ salary dispute with All-Pro Ty Law.
Burris played with the Cincinnati Bengals last season, starting eight games. The Bengals cut him in March.
He twice had to leave games after concussions and was inactive for three games. He finished the year with 44 tackles and two interceptions.
The move Tuesday came a day after the Patriots acquired All-Pro running back Corey Dillon from the Bengals for a second-round draft choice.
It also comes within a week of Law’s arrest in Miami Beach, Fla., in which he was accused of trying to flee from police after a traffic stop.
Law has asked to be traded, citing “irreconcilable differences” following a contract extension offer from the team that he considered an insult.
Law is under contract with New England for two more years. The team offered a four-year extension with a $6.6 million bonus, but Law said his conversations with coach Bill Belichick led him to believe he could get a six- to seven-year extension with a $15 million bonus.
On Tuesday, Patriots owner Robert Kraft called Law “one of my favorite players” and said he hoped Law would be with the team next season.
