SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Florida Marlins extended their shutout streak to a team-record 30 innings, with Carl Pavano and a pair of relievers combining to blank the Montreal Expos 3-0 Thursday.
The World Series champions shut out the Expos in all three games of the series. Montreal was held to three hits as its scoreless string reached a club-record 33 innings.
The last time a team swept a three-game series with shutout was 1995, when Baltimore did it against Detroit.
White Sox 6, Royals 5
CHICAGO – Magglio Ordonez hit a one-out home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday and a three-game series sweep.
Frank Thomas had a two-run homer and Aaron Rowand and hit his first homer of the year for the White Sox, who beat the Royals in their final at bat for the second straight game.
Blue Jays 11, Tigers 0
DETROIT – Cy Young winner Roy Halladay pitched a shutout for his first win of the season, leading the Toronto Blue Jays over the Detroit Tigers 11-0 Thursday.
Halladay (1-2) allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out five.
D-backs 11, Rockies 10
DENVER – Richie Sexson and Shea Hillenbrand each homered and drove in three runs Thursday and the Arizona Diamondbacks ended a five-game losing streak with an 11-10 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
Phillies 6, Reds 4
PHILADELPHIA – Mike Lieberthal gave Philadelphia a first win to remember at Citizens Bank Park.
Lieberthal hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, rallying the Phillies over the Cincinnati Reds 6-4 Thursday.
Cubs 10, Pirates 5
CHICAGO – Michael Barrett connected twice in the first multihomer game of his career, Aramis Ramirez homered for a second straight day and the Chicago Cubs beat up on Josh Fogg and the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 10-5 victory.
Moises Alou also homered for the Cubs, who won two straight for the first time this year.
Rangers 7, Athletics 2
ARLINGTON, Texas – Kenny Rogers pitched seven solid innings, Alfonso Soriano had three hits and the Texas Rangers avoided a three-game sweep with a 7-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday.
Twins 3, Indians 0
CLEVELAND – Brad Radke pitched eight shutout innings for the Minnesota Twins, who finally dodged another costly injury in a 3-0 win Thursday night over the Cleveland Indians.
Mets 4, Braves 0
NEW YORK – Al Leiter got a big boost from the bullpen in his first win of the season, and the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 4-0.
Shane Spencer drove in leadoff hitter Kaz Matsui twice for the Mets, who completed their first shutout of the year. They have split the first six of 19 meetings with the Braves.
Atlanta manager Bobby Cox wasn’t around to see much of it – he was ejected for the first time this season in the top of the fifth for arguing balls and strikes from the dugout.
Leiter, hit in the head by a line drive in his final spring training outing, extended his scoreless streak to 10 1-3 innings to start the season. He threw five shutout innings against Montreal in his first start.
This time, Leiter (1-0) held the Braves hitless through four innings. He was removed with two on in the sixth after throwing 104 pitches, but the bullpen came through in a big way.
David Weathers escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth by getting Julio Franco to ground into an inning-ending double play, preserving a 2-0 lead. Weathers then got Jesse Garcia to ground into a double play to end the seventh.
Rookie Orber Moreno pitched a perfect eighth, and Braden Looper worked a perfect ninth.
Horacio Ramirez (0-1) pitched well for the Braves, but a couple of mistakes cost him.
In the first inning, he walked Matsui, who went to third on Ricky Gutierrez’s double and scored on Spencer’s groundout.
Ramirez walked Leiter, an .089 career hitter, leading off the third, and later balked Matsui to second. He scored on Spencer’s two-out single to center.
Pinch-hitter Karim Garcia added a two-out RBI single in the eighth off C.J. Nitkowski. It was Garcia’s first at-bat since breaking the tip of his left ring finger last Saturday.
Jeff Duncan followed with a run-scoring single, his first hit of the season.
Leiter also laced a double to right-center in the fifth, just his eighth extra-base hit in 461 major league at-bats. On the mound, the left-hander allowed only three singles in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out two and walked three.
Ramirez, who pitched seven scoreless innings against the Cubs in his first start of the season, gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings. He walked four, one intentional.
Notes: Jackie Robinson’s widow, Rachel, addressed the crowd before the game. Her daughter, Sharon, took part in a first-pitch ceremony. … Braves 2B Marcus Giles has hit safely in all nine games this season. He also stole his fourth base. … Jesse Garcia made a diving play at shortstop in the second inning, robbing Duncan of a hit. … Mets CF Mike Cameron was a late scratch from the lineup because of muscle soreness on the inside of his right thigh. A team spokesman said the move was made purely as a precaution because of expected cold weather. He pinch-hit in the eighth and grounded out.
