UNIONTOWN, Pa. — One down, two to go for Central Maine Community College’s women;s basketball team as it tried to win back-to-back USCAA Division II national titles.

And the Mustangs’ latest tourney victory was record-setting.

Brooke Reynolds led all players with 22 points and sister Jordyn added 18 as top-ranked CMCC rolled to a 109-51 win over No. 8 Penn State-Lafayette in the teams’ quarterfinal matchup. The 109 points set a tournament record for points by one team in a game, and the Mustangs’ 30 assists also set a new standard. Much of its success came from its post players.

“That was probably the best game out of our post players, collectively, all season,” coach Andrew Morong said Thursday after the game. “All of them played well. Brooke and Jordyn were on the mark tonight, and so was Jane Lester (16 points) off the bench.”

Thirteen players dressed for the Mustangs (29-1), and 12 scored at least one point.

“And the one who didn’t is typically among our leading scorers, and we know she’s going to get rolling,” Morong said.

The Mustangs started strong, posting a 25-2 lead through the first quarter thanks in part to a suffocating defense.

“When you’re playing the host team on their floor, the last thing you want to do is let them hang around and get the crowd into it,” Morong said. “Stop, score. Stop, score. It was great to see everyone in the game make a positive impact.”

CMCC ran its lead to 56-16 at the half and cruised from there. The Mustangs advance to Friday’s semifinal agains Penn State League champion Penn State-Brandywine, which edged Warren Wilson College 73-70 in their quarterfinal Thursday.

The University of Maine at Augusta, seeded third, played the late game Thursday against Villa Maria.

Unified basketball

Poland 60, Gray-NG 53

POLAND — Logan Flewelling led all players with 25 points and David Ellington added 19 more as Poland edged Gray-New Gloucester 60-53 in a Unified basketball contest on Thursday.

Also a highlight for Poland, J.J. McInnes scored his first points of the season for the Knights, which won their second game in a row after starting the season winless.

Ryan Verrill led the Patriots with 14 points, while Roland and Mark Buzzell netted 12 each in the effort.

Edward Little 47, Oxford Hills 20

AUBURN — Ben Dumont paced the Red Eddies with 10 points in Edward Little’s 47-20 victory over Oxford Hills.

Melady Mata and Josh Dumont each chipped in with six points in the victory.

Branden Skinner paced the Vikings with eight points while Brandon Robare had seven points and Bryan Stone had five points in the losing effort.

The Red Eddies finished the regular season 8-0 while Oxford Hills drops to 0-7 on the season.
