NEW YORK – Scott Hatteberg homered twice, drove in five runs and made a nifty slide to score while Mark Mulder hung on for his major league-leading 15th win, leading the streaking Oakland Athletics over the New York Yankees 13-4 Tuesday night.

Jorge Posada and Gary Sheffield hit early home runs that put New York ahead 4-1, but the A’s stormed back to win for the ninth time in 10 games in a matchup of AL division leaders.

AL player of the week Eric Byrnes got three more hits, and Adam Melhuse also homered for Oakland. Melhuse got into the game in the second inning after catcher Damian Miller’s left knee was bruised by a foul ball.

For all their hitting and the pitching of Mulder (15-3), this game turned a defensive gem by right fielder Jermaine Dye.

It was 4-all in the fourth inning when the Yankees put two runners on with two outs. Derek Jeter followed with drive toward the corner and Dye jumped at the wall to take away an extra-base hit, leaving his spike marks in the padded fence.

Twins 10, Angels 0

MINNEAPOLIS – Backed by sound defense and a burst of power, Carlos Silva pitched his first career complete game and shutout to lead the Minnesota Twins over the Anaheim Angels 10-0 Tuesday night.

The Twins hit four home runs and turned a season-high five double plays, winning for the 12th time in 14 games and handing the Angels just their second loss in seven games.

Torii Hunter homered to left, Jacque Jones singled and Corey Koskie homered to right on consecutive pitches in the fourth.

Justin Morneau added a two-run homer in the seventh, and Henry Blanco hit a solo shot in the eighth.

Blue Jays 7, Indians 6

TORONTO – Pinch-hitter Frank Menechino drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning after Carlos Delgado hit a tying two-run homer in the Toronto Blue Jays’ 7-6 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.

Down 5-3, Toronto sent 10 to the plate in the eighth and scored four times to take the lead.

Alex Rios led off with a single against Rafael Betancourt (4-5) before Delgado hit his 16th homer to tie it.

Betancourt then loaded the bases by allowing a single by Vernon Wells, walking Frank Catalanotto and intentionally walking Gregg Zaun. Rick White came in and got the first out, but his 3-2 breaking pitch to Menechino was ruled a ball, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Catcher Victor Martinez was ejected by plate umpire Marvin Hudson for arguing the call.

BALTIMORE – Rafael Palmeiro passed Babe Ruth on the career hits list, and the Baltimore Orioles beat Seattle 5-4 Tuesday night to complete the first doubleheader sweep against the Mariners in 16 years.

In the opener, Palmeiro drove in three runs and Javy Lopez hit a three-run homer, leading Baltimore to a 9-7 victory.

After going 2-for-3 in the day game to tie Ruth for 36th place, Palmeiro moved past the Bambino in the night game with his 2,874th career hit, a fourth-inning single to right off Jamie Moyer. It was Palmeiro’s lone hit of the game.

Rangers 5, Tigers 4

DETROIT – Mark Teixeira and Kevin Mench homered, and Eric Young hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning to lead the Texas Rangers over the Detroit Tigers 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Young went 3-for-5 for the struggling Rangers, who won for just the third time in 10 games.

Frank Francisco (3-1) pitched 1 1-3 perfect innings in relief of Kenny Rogers, who failed in an attempt to become the American League’s second 14-game winner. Francisco Cordero pitched a perfect ninth for his 32nd save in 34 tries.

With the game tied at 4 in the seventh, Gary Matthews Jr. led off with a double, took third on Rod Barajas’ sacrifice bunt and came home with the go-ahead run on Young’s single to right off Nate Robertson (9-6).

White Sox 12, Royals 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jose Contreras won his debut for the Chicago White Sox, and Paul Konerko hit a grand slam to tie for the AL home run lead in an 12-4 rout of the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Contreras (9-5), obtained from the New York Yankees on Saturday for slumping All-Star Esteban Loaiza, was given a 7-0 lead by the fifth inning and left after the sixth, when Chicago extended its lead to 10-4 lead on Aaron Rowand’s three-run homer. He gave up four runs – two earned – and five hits in six innings, struck out three and walked one.

Astros 3, Braves 2

HOUSTON – Roger Clemens pitched seven strong innings on the eve of his 42nd birthday but was denied the win by his bullpen before the Houston Astros rebounded to beat Atlanta 3-2 Tuesday night and stop the Braves’ five-game winning streak.

Clemens, who allowed four hits. left with a 2-1 lead after walking the first two batters in the eighth. Dan Miceli (4-5) retired Charles Thomas on a forceout, then loaded the bases with a walk to Marcus Giles and allowed an RBI grounder to Chipper Jones.

Cubs 5, Rockies 3

DENVER – Kerry Wood pitched eight innings despite a shaky start, and Derrek Lee hit his 21st homer in a five-run second that lifted the Chicago Cubs over the Colorado Rockies 5-3 Tuesday night.

Wood (6-4) gave up three runs in the first inning, but allowed just three hits over the next seven.

He struck out five and walked three to win for the third win in five starts since coming off the DL following a triceps strain.

Sammy Sosa drove in a run and so did Nomar Garciaparra, playing his second game since the Cubs acquired him from Boston. Chicago has won six of eight to stay within reach of San Diego in the NL wild card race.

Mets 12, Brewers 3

MILWAUKEE – Al Leiter had another brilliant outing, limiting Milwaukee to one run over seven innings, and the New York Mets scored five times in the sixth and ninth innings to rout the Brewers 12-3 on Tuesday night and snap a three-game losing streak.

Leiter (8-3) scattered seven hits and dropped his major league-leading ERA to 2.12. He struck out seven and walked one intentionally. Since returning from the disabled list June 1, the 38-year-old left-hander is 7-1 with a 1.90 ERA in 12 starts.

Mike Cameron homered and drove in three runs, and Joe McEwing also had three RBIs for New York, which scored only six runs in three losses to Atlanta over the weekend.
