BOSTON (AP) – David Ortiz agreed to a one-year contract worth about $4.6 million Friday, avoiding arbitration with the Boston Red Sox.

The designated hitter-first baseman was among four Red Sox players who filed for arbitration and all agreed to deals before reaching a hearing. The others were pitchers Byung-Hyun Kim and Scott Williamson and right fielder Trot Nixon.

Ortiz, coming off his best season, gets a salary increase from $1.25 million to $4,587,500. He also would get an extra $50,000 each for 525 and 600 plate appearances. He had asked for $5 million and the team offered $4.2 million.

Ortiz was third in the AL with a .592 slugging percentage and hit .288 with 31 homers, 39 doubles and 101 RBIs in his first season with Boston after signing as a free agent. He had spent all or parts of the previous six seasons with Minnesota.

He had six multi-homer games for a team that set the major-league record for slugging percentage. And 72 of his 129 hits were for extra bases. But he struggled in his 12 playoff games against Oakland and the New York Yankees, batting .191 with two homers and eight RBIs.

Ortiz began last season with a .266 career average with 58 homers and 238 RBIs.
