MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Bucks’ reserves scored more than half their points Tuesday night, as big of a reason as any for Milwaukee’s victory over Boston.
Michael Redd scored 20 points and reserve Toni Kukoc had 16, leading the Bucks to their sixth victory in seven games – 111-103 Tuesday night.
The Bucks also got 14 points from Erick Strickland and 12 from Desmond Mason.
All told, the Bucks’ bench accounted for 56 points.
“It’s hard to look at them as reserves,” said Boston’s Paul Pierce, “because I’m used to seeing those guys start. I told the guys before the game, you got guys coming off the bench who used to start. So they definitely have depth in offensive weapons.”
Redd scored 11 points, including the team’s first eight, in the third quarter to help the Bucks lead 77-60.
The Bucks led 94-77 early in the fourth quarter before back-to-back 3-pointers by Davis and Pierce helped Boston close to 102-94 with 3:03 left. The Celtics were within five before Redd made four free throws in the final minute to seal it.
“The whole cavalry came in tonight,” Redd said. “All of them played well tonight.”
Ricky Davis also came off the bench to score a season-high 33 points for Boston. Pierce added 22, Mike James 15 and Mark Blount 12. All of Blount’s points came in the first quarter; he also had a career-high 13 rebounds.
“We had the comeback,” Davis said. “We just couldn’t come up with some of those loose balls. The ball kept bouncing their way, and that’s big.”
Milwaukee’s final 11 points came at the line to blunt Boston’s comeback.
“What killed us tonight is we just couldn’t put together the stops that we needed, especially in the fourth quarter,” Pierce said.
The teams combined for 45 turnovers, 24 by the Bucks.
“Sometimes the defense causes you to not take care of the ball … for the most part I think it was us trying to make the perfect pass,” Milwaukee coach Terry Porter said.
The Celtics used a 14-1 run to lead 27-20 after one quarter. But the Bucks, getting 27 points from their bench, led 50-44 at halftime. With the starters struggling on defense, the Bucks put five reserves on the floor and turned the tide as Kukoc and Strickland scored eight points each in the second quarter.
The victory came three days after Milwaukee’s five-game winning streak ended in New York.
“Definitely a great win,” Redd said. “Boston had been playing well. We came in here and did a good job of stopping what they can do.”
