SAN FRANCISCO – Terrell Owens dropped twice as many touchdown passes as he caught. That’s about all that went wrong for the San Francisco 49ers against the Super Bowl champions.

Owens made a 75-yard scoring romp through Tampa Bay’s defense, and Garrison Hearst rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers’ 24-7 victory over the Buccaneers on Sunday.

Jeff Garcia passed for 253 yards, also throwing a TD pass to Tai Streets, as the 49ers (3-4) dominated the Buccaneers, who beat them in last season’s playoffs. Warren Sapp and Co. hounded Garcia throughout the 49ers’ 31-6 loss last January, and coach Steve Mariucci was fired three days later.

In the rematch, the 49ers turned in their most complete performance of the new season – even though Owens, who caught six passes for 152 yards, still hasn’t lost his butterfingers.

Seahawks 24, Bears 17

SEATTLE – Shaun Alexander raced around left end for the game-winning score and carried the Seattle Seahawks to their best start ever.

Alexander’s 25-yard touchdown run with 58 seconds remaining gave Seattle a dramatic 24-17 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday, lifting the Seahawks (5-1) to the best start in franchise history.

Alexander gained 101 yards on 21 attempts, scoring twice.

Seattle’s Marcus Trufant sealed the win when he intercepted a pass by Chris Chandler with 37 seconds on the clock.

The Bears (1-5) lost for the 17th time in their last 20 games, but they were so close to a different outcome. Chicago pulled to 17-15 on a 1-yard dive by fullback Stanley Pritchett with 4:12 remaining, then tied it with a 2-point conversion. Chandler rolled right but found no one, so he tucked the ball and slipped across the goal line.

Saints 45, Falcons 17

ATLANTA – The New Orleans Saints didn’t have to worry about Michael Vick – or the Atlanta Falcons defense.

Aaron Brooks threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns, Deuce McAllister scored twice and the Saints handed the Falcons another humiliating loss, 45-17 on Sunday.

New Orleans (3-4) won its second in a row, though it’s hard to tell if the Saints turned a corner with their dominating performance against the Falcons.

New Orleans finished with 507 yards. Brooks was 23 of 30 passing. McAllister ran for 116 yards. Joe Horn caught eight passes for 133 yards.

Atlanta has lost six in a row since a season-opening victory at Dallas, a game that seems about a million years ago. And the Falcons aren’t just losing – they’re getting embarrassed. During the losing streak, they have surrendered a staggering 34.5 points a game.

Rams 34, Packers 24

ST. LOUIS – The Rams’ D stopped Ahman Green and slowed Brett Favre just enough.

Marc Bulger threw three touchdown passes, and Isaac Bruce became the 18th player in NFL history to top 10,000 yards receiving in St. Louis’ 34-24 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

But it was the defense that allowed St. Louis (4-2) to overcome Bulger’s two interceptions and some second chances handed out by the Rams’ special teams.

Favre threw two touchdown passes for Green Bay (3-4), but his effort at a comeback fizzled after a 1-yard TD toss to William Henderson pulled Green Bay within 21-17 in the third.

Favre’s career record in domes fell to 12-21. He went 23-of-32 for 268 yards, an interception and two touchdowns.
