Bates beats Williams for the first time ever.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Ken Adams rushed for 119 yards and the game-winning touchdown with 1:18 left as Bates stunned Williams 10-7 Saturday at Weston Field.
It was the first win ever for Bates in 16 tries against perennial NESCAC power Williams. It also marked the first time in 128 games that the Ephs dropped back-to-back at home.
Both teams are 1-2.
In another NESCAC stunner, Colby moved to 2-1 with a 31-7 victory at Wesleyan. Bowdoin dropped a 26-7 decision to Tufts.
Williams opened the scoring late in the first quarter as Tyler Shea plunged in for a 1-yard touchdown run. Nick Carr hit a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter to pull Bates within 7-3.
Williams fumbled on its own 36-yard line with 2:12 left, and Bates took the lead for good on a three-play, 36-yard scoring drive.
Senior quarterback Chris Gwozdz hit Owen Miehe with a 32-yard pass to set up first-and-goal from the 4. Adams, a freshman, punched across the goal line on his second attempt.
Adams carried 34 times in his first career start. Gwozdz was also solid for the Bobcats, completing 16-of-32 passes for 158 yards.
Nine of his connections went to Miehe, who finished with 116 yards.
Bates had a chance to take the lead earlier in the fourth quarter when Mike Horan forced a fumble and Pat Foley returned it to the Williams 25. Adams carried the ball twice to the Ephs’ 13, but Williams stopped Bates on four plays from that spot.
