NEW YORK – Marlon Anderson’s two-out single snapped an eighth-inning tie, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays took advantage of a throwing error by Enrique Wilson and New York’s shaky bullpen for a 5-2 victory over the Yankees on Sunday.

Toby Hall added a two-run double as the Devil Rays scored three unearned runs in the eighth to end New York’s eight-game winning streak. Rocco Baldelli homered for Tampa Bay, which snapped a five-game skid and avoided its 90th loss.

Derek Jeter hit a two-run shot for the Yankees, who began the day with a 5-game lead over Boston in the AL East.

Felix Heredia (0-1) retired his first two batters in the eighth, and pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes hit a grounder to third. But Wilson, playing to give Aaron Boone a rest, threw high to first.

That opened the door for the Devil Rays.

Angels 2, Mariners 1

SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners missed a chance to take over the AL wild-card lead Sunday when Tim Salmon hit a run-scoring single and Scott Spiezio followed with an RBI double in the eighth inning to give the Anaheim Angels a 2-1 victory.

Seattle came close to tying it in the ninth, putting a runner on third with one out. But Mike Cameron struck out looking against Troy Percival and Randy Winn popped up to end it.

The Mariners remained a half-game behind Boston for the wild card. The Red Sox lost to Chicago.

Athletics 6, Rangers 5

ARLINGTON, Texas – Eric Chavez drew a bases-loaded walk to cap Oakland’s three-run seventh as the Athletics rallied to beat Texas 6-5 Sunday night for their sixth straight win.

Oakland has a 3-game lead in the AL West over Seattle. The A’s have won 21 of their last 28 games, and have their largest division lead this season. The Mariners are 12-15 in their last 27 games.

Texas starter Tony Mounce, after giving up two early homers, retired 14 of 15 batters and had a 5-3 lead before Scott Hatteberg and Terrence Long had consecutive singles to start the seventh.

Braves 8, Marlins 4

MIAMI – The Atlanta Braves are tough to sweep, as they showed with a ninth-inning comeback Sunday against wild-card leader Florida.

Rob Fick’s two-out, two-run single gave the Braves the lead in a five-run ninth, and they ended the Marlins’ seven-game winning streak by winning 8-4.

The Braves snapped a three-game losing streak and avoided being swept by Florida in a three-game series for only the second time.

Phillies 10, Pirates 7

PITTSBURGH – Jim Thome drove in three runs as the Philadelphia Phillies shook off two weekend losses in Pittsburgh to quickly open an eight-run lead, then held on for a much-needed 10-7 victory Sunday over the Pirates.

Randy Wolf (15-9), the Phillies’ most reliable starter when they need an important victory, pitched 6 1-3 innings to win his third straight

decision. He also helped himself with two hits as Philadelphia avoided a three-game sweep.
