BOSTON (AP) – Red Sox right fielder Trot Nixon has a strained muscle in his left calf and will probably miss at least a week.

Nixon left in the second inning of Tuesday’s game at Baltimore after injuring his leg running to first base. He sat out Wednesday’s game against the Orioles. He was examined Thursday – an off day – by team physician Dr. Bill Morgan.

and had an MRI exam performed. The test revealed the strain.

Red Sox spokesman Kevin Shea said the team will monitor Nixon’s condition. He’s listed as day-to-day.

Boston trailed New York in the AL East by 31/2 games Thursday. The Red Sox held a two-game lead over Seattle in the wild-card race.

The Red Sox open a three-game series Friday with the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park.
