SOUTH PARIS — Frederick Joseph Mayo, 96, passed away at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris on Thursday, March 8, surrounded by his loving family.

The son of Ephraim and Beatrice (Therrian) Mayo, Fred Mayo was born on Cinco de Mayo in Rumford in 1921. He attended Rumford schools and graduated from Stephens High School. After graduation he started working for the Oxford paper mill in Rumford, and then moved to Westbrook to take a job at the S.D. Warren paper mill. This move was life changing because he met his wife, a Westbrook native, Lucienne St. Cyr. After marriage the two settled in Westbrook to raise their family. Frederick worked at S.D. Warren for 41 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, especially in the Rangeley Lakes region, and in Canada. He also loved spending time at his camp on Sebago Lake. He was a member of the American Legion. He served his country in the Army during WWII in the Army Air Corps 380th Air Service Group. Fred will be remembered for telling his children to “go ask your mother” when they came to him with their many questions, and for his reply to their question: “Are we there yet?” “Just around the corner.”

He was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Lucienne Mayo, in 2013, and by his daughter-in-law Eileen Mayo.

He is survived by his son, Donald Mayo, of Standish, his daughter Pauline Raymond, and her husband, Henry, of Standish, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, countless nieces and nephews, and hugs and kisses from someone special.
