OAKLAND, Calif. – Miguel Tejada did it again.

The AL MVP hit a two-run double off Yankees closer Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning, ruining Andy Pettitte’s one-hit performance with his second game-ending hit in three days and giving the Oakland Athletics a 2-1 win over New York on Sunday.

Mark Mulder (15-7) pitched a five-hitter but seemed headed for defeat until the dominant Pettitte was removed after walking Mark Ellis to start the ninth.

Eric Chavez moved Ellis to third with a one-out single off Rivera (5-1), then Tejada launched a drive off the elevated wall in deep left field, driving home Ellis and Chavez.

Left fielder Hideki Matsui got too close and let the carom bounce over his head, taking away any chance the Yankees had to get Chavez. There was no throw as Chavez scored.

On Friday night, Tejada hit a solo homer in the 10th to end the Athletics’ 3-2 win. Oakland’s superstar shortstop got another joyous home-plate reception on Sunday, and thousands of fans in the sellout crowd cheered for several minutes afterward.

Blue Jays 4, Angels 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Kelvim Escobar, the subject of trade rumors earlier in the week, pitched shutout ball into the ninth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Anaheim Angels 4-0 Sunday.

Escobar (7-6) gave up six hits in 8 1-3 innings. He struck out four, walked four and won for only the second time in nine starts.

Escobar left after giving up two hits in the ninth. Trever Miller got one out and Cliff Politte got the final out for his 12th save.

Royals 2, Devil Rays 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jimmy Gobble pitched into the seventh inning in his major league debut, and Aaron Guiel hit an inside-the-park homer as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 2-0 Sunday.

Guiel hit Kansas City’s second inside-the-park shot of the series, and Joe Randa was 2-for-4 with a home run as the Royals stayed atop the AL Central despite managing only four hits.

Angel Berroa hit an inside-the-park homer Friday in a 9-6 loss.

Gobble (1-0), called up from Double-A Wichita on Saturday, gave up six hits in six-plus innings with three strikeouts and one walk. He was replaced by Curtis Leskanic after giving up a leadoff double to Damian Rolls.

Twins 7, Tigers 2

MINNEAPOLIS – Johan Santana pitched six solid innings for his first win since moving into Minnesota’s starting rotation, and Shannon Stewart homered as the Twins defeated the Detroit Tigers 7-2 Sunday.

One day after the Tigers snapped a 16-game losing streak to Minnesota, the Twins scored two quick runs to extend Detroit’s first-inning woes.

The Tigers went 1-5 on their trip to Seattle and Minnesota and allowed 22 first-inning runs.

Santana (5-3) had been 0-2 in four starts since replacing Joe Mays in the rotation on July 11. He gave up two runs and five hits, striking out seven.

Mariners 8, White Sox 2

SEATTLE – Ichiro Suzuki and Edgar Martinez each hit a two-run single in a six-run fifth inning Sunday as the Seattle Mariners snapped Mark Buehrle’s seven-game winning streak with an 8-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Gil Meche won despite throwing 116 pitches in just five innings, helping the Mariners take two of three in a series between playoff contenders.

Seattle remained four games ahead of Oakland in the AL West, while the White Sox fell two games behind first-place Kansas City in the AL Central.

The Royals visit Chicago for a three-game series starting Monday.

The Mariners, shut out by Buehrle on one hit through the first four innings, got six hits in the fifth. Two walks and a single by Willie Bloomquist loaded the bases for Suzuki, who singled to give Seattle a 2-1 lead.

With two outs, Bret Boone reached on an infield single and Martinez’s two-run single made it 4-1. John Olerud and Mike Cameron added RBI singles.

Two of Seattle’s fifth-inning hits glanced off the glove of shortstop Jose Valentin.
