CLEVELAND (AP) – The Boston Celtics have agreed to trade guard J.R. Bremer and backup center Bruno Sundov to Cleveland for swingman Jumaine Jones, a spokesman for the Cavaliers said Monday.
An announcement planned for Monday evening was postponed because there wasn’t enough time to file the proper paperwork with the league. Both teams have agreed to the deal and expect to officially announce it on Tuesday, spokesman Ted Carper said.
Jones, a 6-foot-8 guard-forward from Georgia, joined the Cavs in 2001 in a trade with Philadelphia. He averaged 9.8 points and 5.1 rebounds last season, his second with Cleveland.
The 6-2 Bremer, a Cleveland native, averaged 4.7 points and 1.2 rebounds last season after joining Boston as an undrafted rookie from St. Bonaventure.
Sundov, a 7-2 Croatian, signed as a free agent with the Celtics last July but was used sparingly in 26 games. He averaged 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds in 5.3 minutes.
This is the second time the Cavaliers have worked out a trade for Jones. He was shipped to Sacramento before last season, but the deal was rescinded when point guard Mateen Cleaves failed his physical.
Cleveland has been trying to revamp its point guard position, which was the weakest area last season, when the team compiled a league-worst 17-65 record.
Kevin Ollie, who signed as a free agent two weeks ago, will be counted on to teach the position to 6-8 rookie LeBron James, the top overall pick in the NBA draft.
Bremer will get minutes off the bench along with forward Ira Newble, who signed last week and can replace Jones as the team’s swingman.
Also on Monday, the Celtics announced the signing of second-round draft pick Brandon Hunter. The 6-7 forward out of Ohio University led the nation in rebounding his senior year, with 12.6 per game, and was picked 56th overall by the Celtics in the NBA draft last month. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
