TORONTO – Frank Menechino had three hits, including a solo homer, and the Toronto Blue Jays scored six unearned runs in the third inning of a 7-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Friday night.

Reed Johnson also had three hits, and Miguel Batista pitched six strong innings for the Blue Jays, who ended a three-game losing streak.

Batista (9-6) allowed three runs on six hits to win for the seventh time in his last eight decisions at SkyDome. He struck out four and walked two.

Rookie Jason Frasor got four outs for his 11th save in 12 chances.

Rocco Baldelli and Aubrey Huff homered for the Devil Rays, who have lost 13 of 18 since moving a season-high two games over .500 on July 3.

The Blue Jays trailed 2-1 before scoring a season-high six runs in the third.

After Menechino led off with a single, Reed Johnson put down a bunt that Huff fielded, but the third baseman’s throw to first sailed into foul territory for an error, allowing Menechino to score and Johnson to reach third.

Vernon Wells followed with a grounder to Huff, who bobbled the ball for another error. Johnson scored on Carlos Delgado’s run-scoring double play. Eric Hinske hit an RBI single, Josh Phelps a two-run double and Chris Gomez an RBI single to give Toronto a 7-2 lead.

Cubs 5, Phillies 1

PHILADELPHIA – Moises Alou, Sammy Sosa and Derrek Lee homered to back Kerry Wood, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 Friday night for their third straight win.

Alou went 2-for-4 and has six homers and 13 RBIs in his last nine games. Lee’s homer was his fifth in nine games and his fifth in 31 at-bats against Brett Myers (5-8).

Sosa hit a two-run drive in the eighth off Ryan Madson, a 445-foot drive to center that ended the pitcher’s scoreless streak at 21 innings.

Wood (5-3) improved to 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA since returning from nearly two months on the disabled list caused by a strained right triceps. He opened by allowing Jimmy Rollins’ triple, Placido Polanco’s RBI single and Bobby Abreu’s walk, but then pitched shutout ball through the sixth. He gave up five hits, struck out six and walked four.

Expos 2, Marlins 1

MONTREAL – Orlando Cabrera’s sacrifice fly in the fourth ended Montreal’s 42-inning scoreless streak against Florida, and Jose Vidro hit a go-ahead RBI double in the fifth to lead the Expos to a 2-1 victory over the Marlins on Friday night.

Tony Armas Jr. pitched five strong innings for Montreal, which played its first game at Olympic Stadium in four weeks.

The Expos had been shut out in each of their last four games against the Marlins, but Cabrera’s sac fly off Brad Penny tied the game at 1 and put Montreal on the scoreboard against Florida – finally.

It was the longest such streak in the majors since the California Angels shut out Cleveland over 44 consecutive innings in 1966, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The New York Highlanders had a major league-record 45-inning scoreless streak against Boston in 1906.

PITTSBURGH – Oliver Perez struck out 11 in seven innings, and Craig Wilson drove in two runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 Friday night.

The Pirates are 6-2 since the All-Star break and have won 18 of 24. They improved to 23-23 at PNC Park after starting 9-19 at home this season.

In 56 career starts, Perez (6-4) has 10 outings with 10 strikeouts or more, including five against the Reds. He leads the majors this season with 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

Perez gave up five hits and three runs. He walked one and hit a batter before a sellout crowd of 37,703.

White Sox 6, Tigers 4

CHICAGO – After learning that Magglio Ordonez could miss the rest of the season because of an injured knee, the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 6-4 Friday night as Carlos Lee hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs.

Ordonez, a four-time All-Star, went back on the disabled list Friday and could spend up to eight weeks on crutches. The outfielder has a fluid problem in his knee, stemming from a collision the All-Star right fielder had with second baseman Willie Harris on May 19 in Cleveland.

Ordonez went on the 15-day disabled list a week after the collision and had surgery to repair torn cartilage on June 5.

Chicago already is missing two-time AL MVP Frank Thomas, expected to miss eight weeks with a broken bone in his left foot.

Twins 7, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE – Corey Koskie homered and had a season-high four RBIs to lead the Minnesota Twins to their fifth straight victory, 7-3 over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.

Jacque Jones also homered and Torii Hunter had three hits for the first-place Twins, who maintained their half-game lead over Chicago in the AL Central.

Minnesota starter Carlos Silva (9-7) allowed three runs and nine hits in six-plus innings to earn his first win in a month. The right-hander, who took over the team lead in wins, was 0-3 with a 5.93 ERA in four starts since June 23.

Indians 3, Royals 2

CLEVELAND – Ben Broussard homered on a 3-0 count with one out in the 11th inning, lifting the overworked Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 victory Friday night over the Kansas City Royals.

Broussard took three straight balls from Nate Field (2-2) before driving his sixth home run over the wall in left-center and then getting pounded by his teammates at the plate.

The Indians have played more extra-inning games than anyone in baseball, and Broussard’s shot made them 8-11 in extras.

Rick White (4-4) got the win after stranding the go-ahead run at second in the 11th by striking out Ruben Mate

Giants 7, Cardinals 2

ST. LOUIS – Dustin Hermanson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Barry Bonds hit a three-run homer, helping the San Francisco Giants end the St. Louis Cardinals’ five-game winning streak with a 7-2 victory Friday night.

Hermanson (4-3) allowed only a fourth-inning walk to Albert Pujols before Pujols’ 28th homer ended his no-hit bid with one out in the seventh. Bonds never moved in left field as the ball sailed far above him – a drive estimated at 434 feet.

Hermanson, released by the Cardinals last June, gave up two runs on three hits in 6 2-3 innings. He struck out five and walked one for his first victory since June 27.

The Giants, facing the Cardinals for the first time this year, are 6-1 against St. Louis the last two seasons. The Cardinals lost for only the second time in 14 home games, and have won 15 of 18 overall.

Bonds’ 25th homer of the season, and 683rd of his career, gave the Giants a 6-0 lead in the seventh.

He had been 0-for-8 against Jeff Suppan (9-6) before launching a 3-1 fastball over the right-field wall for his first homer in five days.

Ray Durham also homered for the Giants, who ended the Cardinals’ 27-inning shutout streak with two runs in the fourth.

The Cardinals shut out the Brewers the previous two games.
