FOXBORO, Mass. – Three rookies from the New England Patriots’ 2003 draft class have been signed, the team said Tuesday.
The terms of the signings of fourth-round draft picks Dan Klecko and Asante Samuel and seventh-round choice Ethan Kelley were not disclosed.
Klecko was drafted after earning All-Big East honors at Temple. The 5-11, 283-pound nose tackle started 36 of 40 games during his college career and recorded 206 tackles.
Samuel played in 45 games for Central Florida and recorded 127 tackles. The 5-10, 185-pound cornerback had eight career interceptions for 71 yards.
Kelley led Baylor with 75 tackles in 2002. The 6-2, 315-pound nose tackle was originally recruited as a defensive lineman, but he started two years on the offensive line before being moved back to defense.
Bruins sign Girard, Grosek
BOSTON – The Boston Bruins signed defenseman Jonathan Girard and left wing Michal Grosek to one-year contracts on Tuesday.
Also, free agents Hal Gill, Brian Rolston and Bryan Berard filed for salary arbitration before Tuesday night’s deadline.
That means the players will stay with the Bruins next season.
Girard was Boston’s first pick in the 1998 Entry Draft and played his first full NHL season last year, scoring six goals and recording 16 assists.
Grosek signed as a free agent with Boston last year and had two goals and 18 assists in 63 games.
Surgery for Kiel
SAN DIEGO – San Diego Chargers second-round draft pick Terrence Kiel, shot during an attempted carjacking this month, will undergo arthroscopic surgery, the team said Tuesday.
Kiel was shot in the calf, knee and stomach July 4 in the parking lot of a Houston mall. He was released from the hospital two days later. Chargers team doctors later discovered he has a fractured bone in his lower left leg and loose fragments in his knee, team spokesman Bill Johnston said.
During surgery Wednesday in San Diego, doctors will remove the fragments, as well as a bullet that was lodged near the surface of Kiel’s abdomen, Johnston said.
The fractured fibula does not require surgery, only four-to-six weeks of rest and rehabilitation.
“For his immediate football career this season, it’s a mild setback,” general manager A.J. Smith said in a statement. “But, in the big picture, we’re grateful and Terrence is fortunate that it wasn’t worse.”
Kiel, a former Texas A&M safety, was sitting in his car in the mall parking lot when he was shot by an unidentified man, Houston police said.
Kiel was selected 62nd overall by the Chargers in April’s NFL draft.
