TORONTO – Andy Pettitte won his sixth straight start and Jason Giambi hit his 24th homer run as the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-5 on Friday night.

The fading Blue Jays have lost four in a row and 11 of 13, including the first four of 12 straight games against the Red Sox and Yankees.

Toronto starter John Wasdin lasted just one inning plus five batters in his first start in the majors since Sept. 28, 2000.

Indians 12, White Sox 5

CLEVELAND – Ben Broussard hit two home runs and had a career-high five RBIs, and Brian Anderson earned his third straight win as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago White Sox 12-5.

It was the first multihomer game for Broussard, who also had a single and double .

Royals 13, Rangers 3

ARLINGTON, Texas – Carlos Beltran and Raul Ibanez each homered and had three RBIs, and the Kansas City Royals used an eight-run eighth inning to route the Texas Rangers 13-3.

Beltran keyed the eight-run eighth when he homered off reliever Aaron Fultz. It was Beltran’s 12th homer of the season.

National League

Braves 9, Cubs 5

CHICAGO – Vinny Castilla homered for the second straight game and drove in four runs as the Braves beat Chicago 9-5, their season-high eighth straight win.

The game’s outcome was overshadowed by a scary moment in the second when Braves second baseman Marcus Giles collided violently with Cubs starter Mark Prior, sending both players to the ground wincing in pain.

Cardinals 4, Padres 2

ST. LOUIS – Woody Williams did not allow a baserunner into the sixth inning and had a sacrifice fly in a decisive two-run seventh as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 4-2 to snap a four-game losing streak.

Williams walked Gary Bennett with one out in the sixth to end his string. After a sacrifice, Mark Kotsay hit a two-run homer for the Padres first hit. Williams allowed two hits over eight innings.

Marlins 5, Expos 4

MONTREAL – Todd Hollandsworth hit a tying homer and Juan Encarnacion singled in the go-ahead run later in the ninth inning to lead the Florida Marlins to a 5-4 win over the Montreal Expos.

Brad Penny allowed five hits in eight innings, trading in a complete game for a win as a result of Florida’s ninth-inning comeback.

Rockies 7, Dodgers 6

DENVER – Todd Helton had two homers and Greg Norton walked with the bases loaded in the eighth inning for the go-ahead run as the Colorado Rockies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-6.

Jay Payton had three RBIs for Colorado, which overcame three costly errors for its third straight win..

Phillies 10, Mets 3

NEW YORK – Pat Burrell homered to cap a four-run first inning, and Mike Lieberthal drove in two runs in Philadelphia’s six-run fifth as the Phillies cruised to a 10-3 victory over the New York Mets.

Randy Wolf (10-4), headed to his first All-Star game, allowed one run and scattered four hits over six innings as the Phillies won their fourth straight and improved to 4-1 on their road trip.

Astros 4, Pirates 2

HOUSTON – Jeff Bagwell homered and Wade Miller pitched six solid innings as the Houston Astros beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 for their fifth straight victory. Adam Everett, Craig Biggio and Morgan Ensberg also drove in runs for the NL Central-leading Astros.

Reds 6, Brewers 1

MILWAUKEE – Ken Griffey Jr. homered for the fourth straight game, and Ryan Dempster pitched seven strong innings as the Cincinnati Reds ended an eight-game losing streak by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 6-1.

The Reds scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie and take control of the game.
