AVON — Voters will elect municipal officials and approve spending articles at the annual town meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Town Office.
Offices to be filled are: a second selectman for three years; a treasurer, a tax collector, a constable and a road commissioner, all for one year; and a school board director for three years.
All officeholders have agreed to serve if nominated and elected from the floor.
This year’s proposed budget of about $240,000 is less than a 5 percent increase over last year, according to First Selectman Greta Espeaignnette.
“We work very hard on keeping the budget increases as low as possible,” she said. “We plan ahead to pay for bigger projects by creating accounts and building them over a few years to complete them without raising taxes.”
One long-planned construction project is installing a new bridge on Bob Orbeton Road.
“Since we purchased a new truck this year, we propose putting unused excise taxes into the paving account, rather than the equipment account,” she said.
Property valuations need to be updated within four years, so selectmen suggest adding $2,500 to the $1,070 carryover from 2017. Voters approved building a snack shack and storage facility at Walli Ballfield, and the next project should be an upgrade to the aging playground equipment, fence and benches.
“We would like to use the remainder of the public service account to continue improvement of the ball field area and playground,” Espeaignnette said. “Any funds not used this year can be carried over as usual.”
Voters will be asked to appropriate $55,000 from excise taxes for plowing and sanding winter roads.
Selectmen propose changing the date taxes are due from Dec. 15 to Oct. 15, starting in 2019.
“Changing this date makes it easier on everyone concerned at the end of the year,” Espeaignnette said.
The town report is dedicated to Janne Haines, who passed away in August 2017. A lifelong resident of Avon, she gave time and energy to the town and community, including 13 years as a selectman.
