Veterans council plans Flag Day ceremony
LEWISTON – The L and A Veterans Council will hold a Flag Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 14, at Veterans Memorial Park. Chairman Paul Bernard will serve as master of ceremonies. All organization chaplains or delegates are invited to present a flag.
Flag Day falls within National Flag Week, a time when Americans reflect on the foundations of the nation’s freedom. The flag of the United States represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country’s ideals since its early days.
Many people in the U.S. observe the holiday by displaying the American flag at homes and public buildings. Other ways of observing the holiday include flag-raising ceremonies, Flag Day services, school quizzes and essay competitions about the American flag, musical salutes, street parades and awards for special recognition.
Those with a U.S. flag that is faded, tattered, torn and unserviceable may bring it to the ceremony and members of the council will properly dispose of the flags. The 77th composite squadron, Civil Air Patrol, will be on hand to fold flags for those who would like to present a flag for proper disposal.
Applications will be available for the 18th veterans memorial stone, scheduled to be unveiled on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11.
The event is sponsored by Posts 22, 111, 135 and 153, American Legion; Posts 1603, 9150, 9459 and auxiliary unit 9459, Veterans of Foreign War; Marine Corps League 810; Post 31 and auxiliary unit 31, Franco American War Veterans; and Chapter 11, Disabled American Veterans.
