LISBON – The Lisbon Library Summer Reading Program kickoff program on Tuesday, June 23, will feature award-winning Maine children’s author, Sarah L. Thomson, who has published 25 books for young readers. The kickoff program will be held in the Lisbon Community School cafetorium.
For the first time, there will be two groups of reading program participants, with a presentation for each targeted to their reading level and interests.
The presentation for the first group, kindergarten through grade two, is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. Thomson will read from her “Pirates Ho!” book and lead a pirate treasure hunt.
The program for the second group, grades three through six, will run from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and feature “Dragon Egg,” a search for the dragon’s egg and a creative activity about imaginary creatures.
For the six weeks of the program, participants will visit the library, record the books they have read and earn a prize for their participation.
The theme for the younger group is “I Scream for Ice Cream.” Participants will record their progress on “scoops of ice cream,” which will be placed in giant ice cream cones.
The theme for the older group is “Get Creative at Your Library,” with books recorded on musical notes and paint palettes.
Librarians will visit the school to introduce the program and encourage registrations, during the last week of May and the first weeks of June.
The library has received a $500 grant from the Maine Humanities Council to help fund the program. Through its grant program, the council supports projects that are participatory, meaningful, engaging and appeal to a diverse audience.
