BRIDGTON – Allen Reimer, 25, of Bridgton has been accepted into the Peace Corps.

Reimer departed for Morocco on March 4 to begin pre-service training as an environmental Peace Corps volunteer. Upon graduation from volunteer training in June, Reimer’s work will involve protected areas management, environmental education and community building.

Reimer is the son of Terrance and Margaret Reimer and a graduate of West Lafayette Junior/Senior High School in West Lafayette, Ind. He then attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife, graduating in 2005.

Reimer worked for six months in Kalispell, Mont., with the Montana Conservation Corps, 11 months in Snohomish County, Wash., with the Washington Conservation Corps; and five months in central Oregon as a wild land firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service.

“After completing a year and a half of service in AmeriCorps, I felt I was ready to commit to another two and a half years of volunteer service. The experience in AmeriCorps only heightened my desire to join the Peace Corps,” said Reimer.

During the first three months of his service, Reimer will live with a host family in Morocco to become immersed in the country’s language and culture.

After acquiring the language and cultural skills necessary to assist his community, Reimer will serve for two years in Morocco, living in a manner similar to people in his host country.

Reimer joins the 71 Maine residents serving in the Peace Corps. More than 1,675 Maine residents have served since 1961.
