PARIS – Mary (Langazatell) North has been named veteran of the month at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Paris.
North was born in Portland on Sept. 25, 1915. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps on Aug. 14, 1943. North was a NCO staff sergeant with the 1857th Service Command and received the American Theater Camp Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and the WAAC Service Medal. She was honorably discharged on Nov. 4, 1945.
North wed Richard North in 1956. They settled in Westbrook and raised two sons and a daughter. She was a substitute English teacher for the Westbrook school system for more than 20 years.
North and her husband were active in the Catholic church, acting as deacons in their local church. She enjoyed playing the piano for her family and friends. After she retired from teaching, the couple moved to Otisfield. North has three grandsons and four granddaughters.
She went to the Maine Veterans’ Home in 2002 and resides on the B Unit. She enjoys the music programs that are offered throughout the year.
