Teachers to meet

PARIS – The Oxford County Education Association-Retired will meet on Friday, Oct. 17, at the South Paris Congregational Church. The social period will start at 10:30 a.m. and the business meeting will be at 11.

The program will be a meet and greet the candidates. The scholarship fundraiser will be an apple pie sale. Apple pie orders may be called in to 743-7677. New retirees and support personnel are welcome. If not on a phone tree, call 743-7677 to reserve a lunch.

Church events

PARIS – Trinity Lutheran Church, 34 Buckfield Road, South Paris, invites all children to Sunday school and all adults to “Making the Old Story Our Story” at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 19.

Worship service will be at 10:15 a.m. followed by coffee, refreshments and fellowship. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, parishioners will study the Book of John at 7 p.m. There will be a class on Lutheranism 101 from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 All are welcome.

Author to visit

PARIS – The Seneca Club of the Paris Public Library is sponsoring an event featuring local author Andrew Turner at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the library. Light refreshments will be served.

Turner, the grandson of Paris Public Library’s former librarian Avis Greene, is a native of Oxford Hills and lives in Buckfield with his wife, Corrine, and their family. He is the author of “Surfacing,” a novel about one girl’s seemingly simple desire to challenge the restrictive bonds of her society that becomes a fight for the survival of the human race.

Plan breakfast

WEST PARIS – The West Paris Historical Society met Sept. 15 with 13 members present. After dinner it was voted to give $100 to the Perham Grandstand Fund and to have the annual hunter’s breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 1, with a black powder muzzleloader raffle during the breakfast. The drawing will be at 8:30 a.m.

The society thanked Sandra and Ken Poland for the glass display cabinets donated to the society and Jeff Shock for helping move them in.

The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, with a potluck supper at 7 p.m. and Ben Conant, Oxford County historian, presenting the program.

Gardening program

PARIS – Barbara Murphy, University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Oxford County, will present a program on gardening from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 21 and 28.

A discussion and demonstration on techniques to get more harvest from the garden will be presented. Beginners as well as experienced gardeners are welcome. Preregister by calling 743-6329 or 1-800-287-1428. There is no fee.

Church fair

HARTFORD – The Hartford Community Church craft fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Hartford Town Hall, Route 140. There will be gifts, crafts and food for sale. Lunches will be available.

The event is sponsored by the Women’s Association and all proceeds go to local charities.

Bridge results

NORWAY – The Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club met Oct. 10 in the Fare Share Building, Main Street, when a 4 and 1/2 table Howell movement was played.

Finishing first in Flight A were Georgette Jewell and Pat Quinn; second, Della Starbird and Marta Clements; third, Rosemarie Goodwin and Luke Merry.

Finishing first in Flight B were Eleanor Griffin and Jim Dickens; second, Beverly Pelletier and Beverly Dolan.
