TURNER – The last fundraising event of the season for the North Turner Presbyterian Church will be the annual harvest supper. It is slated this year for 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the GAR Hall, Route 219, North Turner.
Unlike past years, when suppers have always been held on Friday nights, church members are responding to requests that some be held on Saturdays.
The annual chicken barbecue in August was a success. The church cooks served more than 140 pounds of chicken, huge amounts of potato salad and coleslaw and prepared more than 40 meals to go. The proceeds will go a long way toward paying the church’s heating bill this winter.
The harvest supper will feature roasted turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh squash from church members’ gardens as well as other veggies, homemade bread and pickles and a variety of homemade pies. A good will donation will be taken at the door, but there is no set dinner price.
For those wishing to help, there will be a collection box available at the supper for canned and boxed goods that will go to the Turner Food Bank. There has been a steady rise in the number of people needing food bank help and the numbers have doubled since last year at this time.
There will also be a collection canister for the new Turner Heating Assistance Program. The program will be based on donations intended to help those in need with winter heating costs.
The town will distribute whatever funds are collected, and the program is designed to help those whose income is not low enough to qualify for federal and state programs but is not large enough to keep their families warm this winter.
Similar collections will be taken around Turner throughout the fall to fund the heating assistance program.
There will be canisters at stores, sporting events and the town office.
The harvest supper is a public community event and food will be served until it runs out. For more information, call 225-3370.
