Blood drive

MECHANIC FALLS – An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 90 Lewiston St.

Barbecue cook-off

LEWISTON – The newly organized Lewiston Root Cellar, 89 Birch St., will have a chili-barbecue cook-off from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at the Pierce Street Park near the Root Cellar.

Staff is looking for people interested in cooking in the event. Last call for cooks is Wednesday, July 23. Call the cellar at 782-3659 if interested. All the food cooked will be given to inner-city youths and their families.

The Lewiston Root Cellar is an interdenominational Christian mission with a goal of uniting churches in the common cause of satisfying the physical and spiritual needs of inner-city youths and their families.

It receives no contributions from state or federal sources. More than 80 percent of the annual support comes from individuals and local churches.

School open

POLAND – The Poland Historical Society will open the Old Schoolhouse to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, July 24. Members of the Poland Historical Society will be available to give tours and answer questions.

Distribution day

AUBURN – Auburn AC Serve, a part of Serve New England’s food and volunteer program, will hold Distribution Day from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Auburn Advent Christian Church, 263 Turner St., Whitney Street entrance.

Benefit supper

POLAND – A benefit supper for Shirl Willey will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Poland Community Church, 1212 Maine St.

The menu will include two kinds of homemade baked beans, hot dogs, casseroles, coleslaw, brown bread, biscuits, cakes, punch and coffee. Cost will be $7.50, adults; $3, children. Donations will be accepted.

Willey and his family have served the community in a Route. 26 Video business and, more recently, as technician at the transfer stations in Mechanic Falls and Poland as well as custodian of Poland Community Church. Willey is recuperating from a recent stroke.

Lake association

AUGUSTA – The annual meeting of the Annabessacook Lake Improvement Association will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Augusta West Campground. There will be a pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m. followed by a business meeting at 9:15.

Son Games 2008

NEW GLOUCESTER – New Gloucester Congregational Church, 19 Gloucester Hill Road, will hold its annual Summerfest from 9 a.m. to noon during the week Aug. 11 to 15. Summerfest is open to all children age 4 to those who will enter sixth grade in the fall.

The theme is “Son Games,” which will include stories, games, crafts, singing, dancing and drama. To preregister, call the church office at 926-3260.

Camp musical

WINTHROP – Best of Broadway Dance Camp participants will perform several choreographed and costumed numbers from popular Broadway musicals at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at the Winthrop High School Performing Arts Center.

The Winthrop Recreation Department camp is under the direction of professional choreographer Deb Lombard. The public is invited. Donations will be accepted at the door.

The Recreation Department will host Walking on Air, giant inflatable games, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Norcross Point. It is free as part of the community celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Winthrop Fire Department and because of the generosity of the Winthrop High School Class of 2008.

Bridge results

LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club met on July 15 at the Multi-Purpose Center. Winners in Flight A were: first, Luke Merry and Mike Quinn; second, Leslie Buzzell and Nancy Lindgren; third, Jeanine Kivus and Rosemarie Goodwin; fourth, Linda Leotsakos and Janet Arey; fifth, Martine Begert and Lucille Theriault.

Flight B winners were: first, Richard Allen and Martha Young; second, Alberta Turner and Lucille Bilodeau. Another game will be played at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, at the center.

The club also met on July 16 at Schooner Estates, Auburn. Flight A winners were: tied at first, Paul Barber and Luke Merry with Sherry Hinckley and Sally Magee; third, John Hackett and Leslie Buzzell; fourth, Richard Allen and Martha Young; fifth, Mike and Pat Quinn.

Flight B winners were: first, Richard Allen and Martha Young; second, Lucille Bilodeau and Alberta Turner. Another game will be played at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Schooner Estates. A partner is guaranteed at both games. For more information, call Lucille Theriault at 783-0431.
