WILTON – Marc Rodrigue, a disability program navigator with Western Maine Community Action, recently trained CareerCenter staff around the assistive technology and adaptive equipment available in Maine CareerCenters for people with disabilities.
Maine’s CareerCenters are designed to be universally accessible, which means not only is the building accessible, programs and services are as well.
The variety of technology and equipment available to customers can accommodate many disabilities and includes software that enlarges and enhances computer text and graphics, reads text and/or assists customers to perform writing activities such as resumes and cover letters.
Other technology includes a device for magnifying and enhancing written materials, assistive listening devices, an ergonomic keyboard and mouse, height adjustable work station and TTYs.
Individuals with disabilities wishing to learn more about the assistive technology and adaptive equipment available in the CareerCenter may contact their local CareerCenter. To find the nearest center call 1-888-457-8883, TTY 1-800-794-1110 or visit www.mainecareercenter.com.
The disability program navigator initiative is jointly funded through grants from the U.S.Department of Labor and the Social Security Administration. Navigators are working throughout the state to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities by helping them navigate through the many work-related programs and services that are available at Maine CareerCenters.
For more information about the initiative, contact Lead Navigator Libby Stone-Sterling through the Maine Department of Labor, Bureau of Employment Services, at 623-7969 or TTY 1-800-794-1110.
