TURNER – SAD 52 River Valley Adult and Community Education will offer a variety of academic classes this summer, with some of them beginning Monday, June 23, and others commencing in July.

Biology, starting June 23, will deal with the investigation and study in the areas of classifying life forms, ecology, cells, continuity and change. Laboratory activities will be a major part of the course, as well as long-term projects and inquiry-based problem-solving.

Earth sciences will also commence on June 23. Topics in geology, meteorology, astrology and oceanography will be covered. Labs and inquiry-based problem-solving will be a large part of the course.

A social studies/history class will also start June 23. A combination of textbook work, research, films, independent study and projects will complete the course, which will provide participants with the ability to understand and use social studies information

Basic writing, beginning Monday, July 7, will help students achieve their writing goals and is designed with individual needs in mind. Participants will be encouraged to learn in a manner that suits their learning style and will be graded on participation and progress toward their goals.

“Exploring Banned Books” is a three-week course beginning Monday, July 14, that will encourage students to consider why books are banned and challenge them to read one of the two novels assigned to them. Students are required to participate in discussion groups and complete a final project.

Day and evening math classes will be offered starting July 14. They include consumer math, basic math, Algebra I, Algebra 11 and geometry and are designed for students working toward a high school or General Education Developmental diploma. Students will be scheduled for class according to their particular math requirements.

It is the student/parent responsibility to check with the local guidance department to assure that the SAD 52 Adult Education summer school credits will be honored.
