AUBURN – Young girls are invited to attend the annual Mother/Daughter/Doll Tea with their mothers, aunts, grandmothers or friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Woman’s Literary Union Clubhouse, 19 Elm St.
Not only will the girls enjoy storytelling, punch or tea with pastries, but they will have an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for the American Girl doll, “Kit.” Tickets will be available throughout the tea and the drawing will be held at 4. The winner need not be present to win. Tickets are $2 each, or three for $5.
Members of the WLU have been busy designing, cutting and sewing doll clothing that range from overalls and sleep wear to formal dresses and outer wear. Wooden doll beds have been outfitted with mattresses, pillows and quilts. The clothing and beds are designed to fit an 18-inch doll and will be available for purchase at the Doll Boutique, located in the library and solarium of the clubhouse.
Mother Goose, local storyteller Dorothy Darling Gatchell, will entertain with her stories. At 1:15 p.m. she’ll tell the Swedish story, “A Ride on the Red Mare’s Back.” At 2:15 she will tell the story of “Hansel and Gretel,” and at 3:15, Gatchell will repeat the Swedish story.
Displays throughout the first floor of the clubhouse will feature American Girl dolls.
The clubhouse is the former home of Auburn shoe magnate Horatio Foss and his wife, Ella. The tea is a fundraiser to enable the members of WLU to maintain the home in its architectural detail with many original wall coverings.
