OES to install
MECHANIC FALLS – Dwinal Chapter 28, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at the Masonic Hall. There will be a potluck supper at 6:30.
During the meeting members will honor marshals, past and present. Grand Marshal Crystal McKay is expected to attend. Officers not able to be present at installation will be installed, including Stacey York as conductress, Judy Callahan as associate conductress and Marion Hall as Electa.
Keith Bennett, who was the installing patron at the installation, will also be installed as associate patron. All members of the order are invited.
Open meeting
AUBURN – April has been declared “Grange Month,” and Danville Junction Grange is inviting the community to join for an open meeting on Thursday, April 10. Dessert will be served at 6 p.m., and the program will begin at 7.
State Master Jim Owens will be present to award membership certificates to several members who have belonged to the grange for 50 to 70 years. In addition, members will acknowledge the good works of an outstanding community citizen by presenting the “Grange Community Citizen Award.” Kathy Haley will perform several numbers.
Everyone is invited to learn more about the grange.
Kennel club meets
LEWISTON – A representative from Nutro Dog Foods will be the featured speaker at the Lewiston-Auburn Kennel Club meeting on Thursday, April 10. He will discuss the nutritious value of dog foods and will distribute samples.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the home of the president, 198 Russell St. Members and guests are invited.
The current plans for the club’s championship dog shows on Sept. 27 and 28 will be discussed. For more information, call 777-1928.
DAR speaker
BOWDOIN – Regent Sheila Desgrosseilliers has announced that Burnt Meadow Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will entertain DAR Good Citizen and Good Citizenship medal recipients and their parents at a noon luncheon on Saturday April 12, at the home of Corley Anne Byras. The guest speaker will be Valerie Owen, state DAR good citizen chairwoman.
Baby-sitting class
AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA is offering an American Red Cross baby-sitting course for kids ages 11 to 15. Classes will be held on Saturday, April 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, April 14, Tuesday, April 15, and Thursday, April 17, from 4 to 7 p.m., in the YMCA Teen Center.
Cost is $60 a person. Topics will include basic childcare and leadership skills, first aid, infant and child CPR, diapering, feeding and employment skills. The baby-sitting training handbook will be included, and certificates will be mailed after successful completion of the course.

Society speaker
LEWISTON – President Robert Gilbert will be the speaker at the Saints Peter and Paul Society breakfast meeting at 8 a.m. Sunday, April 13, in the Dominican Conference Room. He will go over the proposed revised bylaws, to include the society’s new mission and goals. Several short surveys will also be taken and plans for the society’s 10th anniversary will be discussed. Member input is important, and all members should plan to attend.
New study group
LEWISTON – A New Earth, a new women’s study group is beginning in Lewiston. The study group will be based on the book, “A New Earth, Finding Your Life’s Purpose,” and the Web cast class with Oprah Winfrey and the author, Eckhart Tolle.

Poker tournament
AUBURN – The Captain Frank W. Hulett Post 1603, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S., has applied for another license to hold its third Texas Hold Em’ on Saturday, April 19, at the 588 Minot Ave. post. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and the game will start at 10.
Cost will be $75, and those paying prior to the opening will have preference over those having a reservation. The maximum players will be 75.
Tickets may be purchased at the post home from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturday or by calling Donald W. Linscott at 782-6873. If there are 75 players, the pool will be $3,938 with pay-outs to the top five players.
