LEWISTON – Kendra Biddle and Melanie Therrien, both of Auburn, are February artists of month at the Central Maine Medical Center Rotating Art Gallery.

Biddle attended Syracuse University, earning a bachelor of fine arts in art photography and a minor in art history in 2007. While at Syracuse, she participated in two group shows, Junior Transmedia at Spark December 2005 and the Transmedia Annual at Robert B. Menschel Media Center January to March 2007, and a solo show at the Delavan Center April 2007.

Since 2007 Biddle has been working to combine an interest in fibers and textiles with photography. Working from the traditional mode of painted landscapes, within each image a knit caricature is made to imitate a part of nature, be it a mushroom, lichen or dandelion. Creating these caricatures and adding them to grand landscapes adds a bit of humor to a genre that generally has little, Biddle said.

Therrien, a juried artist, began her art education as a young student of Mercedes Gastonguay of Lewiston. Although she received instruction in various mediums, Therrien is primarily self-taught in her chosen medium of acrylics.

She continues her education at Central Maine Community College. Best known for her whimsical floral creations, she has also painted commissions for her clients for more than 10 years.

She said she is inspired not only by the beauty of Maine but by ancient monuments, artifacts and people. Her work has been shown in many Maine galleries, including Gallery 5, Turner Center for the Arts and Nellie Ricker Art Gallery in Poland Spring.

The Central Maine Medical Center Rotating Art Gallery is sponsored by the Woman’s Hospital Association in its effort to support patients through fundraising projects throughout the year.
