SOUTH PORTLAND – The American Cancer Society’s annual Volunteer Celebration dinner was held on Oct. 25 at the Portland Marriott at Sable Oaks. Lewiston’s Sun Journal team was named recipient of a 2007 Outstanding Income Development Award for its work with Relay For Life of Androscoggin County.
“The team from the Sun Journal has participated very successfully at the Relay For Life of Androscoggin County since the very first event was held 14 years ago,” said Marie Roberge, society community executive.
“They are very resourceful in their fundraising efforts, and every year they come to the event with returning members who can guide and support new members. The newspaper also supports the American Cancer Society by printing announcement, updates and general information about Relay For Life, helping to spread the word to the greater community,” she said.
Accepting the award on behalf of the Sun Journal team were Brenda Cote, Jackie Holbrook and Joyce Franklin.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s version of an athletic relay, but with a new twist. It is a family-oriented event where participants share the camaraderie of a team and raise funds to support the activities of the American Cancer Society.
Teams of eight to 15 members from companies, religious and other organizations, hospitals and schools seek sponsorship prior to the relay, then gather with tents and sleeping bags and camp out at the relay site.
When they are not taking their turn walking, they take part in activities and have local entertainment. To learn more about Relay For Life, call 800-227-2345.
The American Cancer Society volunteer awards are given annually to recognize and honor New England volunteers whose actions and service in the fight against cancer most exemplify the society’s values.
