Melanie A. Roy graduated Aug. 17, with a bachelor’s degree in baking and pastry arts management, from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y.

During her academic career at the institute, she was on the dean’s list seven of nine semesters and was chosen as a Top 10 New Student Chef at the school

She was afforded the opportunity to attend the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen Colo., where the Top 10 Chefs and Top 10 New Chefs, as chose by the Food and Wine Magazine after a year-long search, were paired with the top chefs in the country. She worked with Mario Batali, a top 10 chef in the country.

One of her designed cakes was chosen and featured as the centerpiece for a graduating class. She also worked as an assistant to the director in the Continuing Education Department. She graduated, from Lewiston High School and the Lewiston Regional Technical Center Culinary Arts Program, with honors, under the direction of chef Dan Caron, who she credits with giving her the passion, skills and joy of cooking.

Roy has accepted a position with the Saratoga Bread Basket, in Saratoga, N.Y., as assistant manager and will be responsible for bakery operations, new product development and expanding the cake and wedding cakes department as well as implementing new design ideas and techniques.

She is the daughter of Lionel and Annette Roy of Lewiston and has a brother, Travis, who is graduating in June 2008 from New England College in Biddeford as a registered nurse.
