LEWISTON – Teachers from across Androscoggin County have been invited to attend a special reception just for them at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25,at Museum L-A. It’s an evening for educators to experience just how the museum’s collections and programs will benefit their students.

Many teachers may not know what Museum L-A has to offer, especially for school tours. Teachers will be able to explore both areas of the museum – the new multi-media exhibit, “Portraits and Voices: Workers of Seven Mills,” in the gallery, as well as the permanent collection of artifacts and displays from the local textile, brick-making and shoe industries. While they are exploring, many may choose to play a game for a chance to win door prizes

Teachers will have an opportunity to socialize with colleagues and have refreshments. Browsing among the exhibits may generate questions about the types of school tours they envision.

Teachers will also hear from the museum educator Annette Vance Dorey, who has been developing school tours that are linked to Maine’s Learning Results. “They will be able to suggest customized tours they’d like,” said Dorey.

“We can focus on various aspects of local, state and national history,” said Dorey, “or focus on economic, immigration or production history.” Interpretive programs will be set in the context of what was happening across the nation, not just in Lewiston-Auburn.

Teachers will leave with impressions of what the growing museum can offer to complement what’s being taught in the classroom. They’ll also take along printed material about the direct links to the Learning Results so that school tours can be scheduled to fit in with their curriculum.

Area educators can sign up to attend before Monday, Oct. 22, by calling 333-3381 or by e-mailing [email protected]. The reception is free.

Museum L-A, incorporated in 1996, is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of the Industrial Revolution and its workers in Lewiston-Auburn. The museum works to preserve the heritage of the community so that future generations can take pride in and learn from the culture that produced some of the world’s finest manufactured products and created a strong community.

Museum L-A is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is located at 35 Canal St. in the Bates Mill Complex.
