Rumford Group Homes Inc. awards annual scholarship

RUMFORD – Kristen Chenard of Rumford was selected as the Mountain Valley High School student for the 2007 Joyce B. Roy Scholarship from Rumford Group Homes Inc.

Annually, Rumford Group Homes awards scholarships to a student at Mountain Valley High School and to a student at Dirigo High School in Dixfield.

The scholarship is awarded to a student who plans to continue his or her education after high school graduation.

“The scholarships are intended to honor the memory of Joyce B. Roy, who was one of the founding board members of Rumford Group Homes Inc.,” said Nicholas Waugh, president of the board of directors. “Mrs. Roy was dedicated to the mission of serving children, adolescents and families and helping them improve their futures,” he said.

Chenard is a 2007 graduate of Mountain Valley High School. While in high school, Chenard took core classes from the college preparatory track while receiving academic accolades in English, science, history, math and photography.

This past spring she was inducted into the Mountain Valley High School Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Chenard played field hockey for four years, was a member of the girls’ basketball team, and participated in softball. She was also involved with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program, where she mentored a young student for two years and was involved in class activities.

Chenard is the daughter of Reinett and Greg Chenard of Rumford. She will attend the University of Maine in Orono to pursue a four-year degree in nursing business management with an accounting emphasis.

For 30 years Rumford Group Homes Inc. has served abused and neglected youth and their families from throughout the state, with an emphasis on the tri-county region of Oxford, Androscoggin and Franklin counties.
