BRUNSWICK – The Joshua L. Chamberlain Civil War Round Table will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Morrell Room of the Curtis Memorial Library.
Dennis Sweetser will speak on “William Merrill and Wilbur Mower: Two Maine Boys off to the War.”
Sweetser, an Auburn resident and Civil War buff, will tell the stories of William Merrill of Freeport, who enlisted in the 20th Maine Regiment, and Wilbur Mower of Greene, who enlisted in the 16th Maine Regiment.
Both boys reached the apex of their military careers at the Battle of Gettysburg. A memorial stone was erected by William Merrill’s parents in the Merrill Cemetery in Pownal to honor their son, who died on Little Round Top, Gettysburg, July 2, 1863.
Sweetser is related to William Merrill. He is a graduate of Edward Little High School and Bates College. He taught chemistry at Edward Little High School for 33 of his 42 years as a teacher, retiring as department head. He coached Little League baseball for 41 years.
