Collecting food

LEWISTON – Lewiston Cadet Corps will be collecting food to benefit the Sisters of Mercy Food Pantry at Lewiston High School home football games this fall beginning Friday night, Aug. 31.

The Cadets are doing this as a community service to benefit others. The Cadets are asking that those wishing to donate bring nonperishable food items to the game and give them to Cadets, who will be set up inside the main entrance to the football field.

The cadets will accept canned goods, packaged foods and other nonperishable items. They will deliver the items to the food pantry on behalf of those who donate.

New bench

LEWISTON – Bert Dutil, chairman of the L & A Veterans Council, has announced that a new polished granite bench will be unveiled with the logo of the All American City and the dates on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Lewiston Mayor Larry Gilbert and Auburn Mayor John Jenkins will unveil the bench during the dedication of the new “Remember the Maine” monument at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.

La Survivance

LEWISTON – La Survivance Franaise will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in the Multi-Purpose Center Senior Citizens room, Birch Street. There will be a short presentation featuring comedian Gilles Latulippe followed by a sing-along organized by the secretary, Connie Lambert.

New members are welcome. Maybel Poulin will serve as hostess.

Journaling meeting

LEWISTON – “Journaling for Growth and Healing” will be the topic of discussion at the Wednesday, Sept. 5, meeting of the Central Maine Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Cancer Wellness and Support Group.

Outpatient oncology social worker Kerry Irish will lead a session exploring how journaling can provide the person with cancer and his or her loved ones an opportunity to reflect on their physical, emotional and spiritual journey through diagnosis, treatment and beyond.

The session will provide an opportunity for participants to both write and share their experiences in a supportive environment.

The program will be offered from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Conference Room I on the Lower Level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building at CMMC. The program is free and no advance registration is required. Anyone with questions should call Irish at 795-7118.

Wisdom’s programs

LEWISTON – Wisdom’s Center for Women will hold two special programs in September at 97 Blake Street.

Thursday, Sept. 6, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.: “Recognizing and Coping with Sexual Abuse,” presented by Sara Wood from the Sexual Assault Crisis Center.

Wednesday, Sept. 26, 12:30 to 2 p.m.: “Story-Time for Moms,” presented by Klara Tammany, parent educator with Advocates for Children Participants will read a children’s book together and receive a free book to take home and share with their children. Bring lunch; child care will be available.

There is no fee for any programs at Wisdom’s Center. To register, call 784-0155.

Line dancing

LEWISTON – Beginners line dancing classes will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Fridays, starting Sept. 7, at Central Hall, 191 Lisbon St. Dance with Jackie O. and George.

LEWISTON – Lewiston Adult Education has a limited number of seats available in classes scheduled to begin in September. Registrations are accepted on a first-received, first-processed basis. Classes include:

“American Sign Language I” and “Dream Journey” on Tuesdays beginning Sept. 11; “Financial Planning: A Must for Everyone,” Wednesday, Sept. 19; “Knitting for the Intermediate to Advanced,” Wednesdays, Sept. 5; “Orienteering Basics,” Thursday, Sept. 13; “Painting in Oil or Acrylic,” Mondays, Sept. 10.

Also, “Managing Your Problem Pet,” Monday, Sept. 10; “Relax and Renew” with Nadine Loeb, Wednesdays, Sept. 12; “Scrapbooking I,” Tuesday, Sept. 18; “Steps to Accumulating Wealth,” Wednesday, Sept. 12; “Watercolor,” Tuesdays, Sept. 4.
