TURNER – The River Valley Adult Learning Center will accept registration for those wishing to earn a high school diploma or General Educational Development certificate beginning the week of Aug. 27 by appointment.
Each initial appointment is approximately two to two and a half hours and includes registration, information, assessment, transcript analysis and scheduling for fall classes.
The fall/winter line-up includes basic composition and vocabulary building, which will run for nine weeks starting Tuesday, Sept. 4. It is a skill-building course for the native English speaker. The objective includes knowledge of basic grammar rules, writing forms, such as an essay and a letter, and increasing vocabulary skills.
Chemistry with lab is for students who have not had chemistry before. The class will start Tuesday, Sept. 11, and cover basic concepts and some mathematical approaches. Some algebra would be helpful.
“Algebra I,” commencing Monday, Sept. 10, is structured for students working toward a high school or GED diploma. Students will be scheduled for class according to their particular math requirements.
“Algebra II” will begin Monday, Oct. 29, and is also for students working for their high school or GED diploma. There will also be an evening GED math preparation class starting Sept. 10.
For students who have been away from traditional school for some time, refresher math, beginning Sept. 10, might be helpful. It includes math, fractions and decimals, in preparation for Algebra I.
Starting Sept. 10, the learning lab will be open to all registered adult education students for the purpose of study, computer lab and independent course studies. A schedule to meet the requirements needed for graduation or post-secondary requirements will be developed.
A social studies/history class will start Tuesday, Sept. 11. A combination of textbook work, research, films, independent study and projects complete the 15-week course.
River Valley Adult and Community Education offers PLATO to registered adult education students for credit toward a high school diploma.
The PLATO learning lab is a self-study computer-based program where students can work at their own pace to complete credit courses toward a diploma or to enhance skills for post-secondary studies. A variety of courses are offered through PLATO, including “Algebra I,” communications and biology.
