LEWISTON – Lewiston Adult Education will offer a number of classes to teach traditional and contemporary crafts to area residents starting in September. Ages 18 to 118 are welcome.

“Traditional Rug Hooking for Beginners” is a six-week program beginning Wednesday, Sept. 5, instructing participants in the historic Canadian Maritime/New England art of rug hooking. The technique uses wool flannel strips and linen. Students will create an heirloom quality mat or chair seat.

“Weaving Then and Now” is an introductory class in the fiber arts. With the help of Maria Kovacs, participants will create a tapestry wall hanging on a small frame loom. To connect the past to the present, class members will receive a special presentation by Museum L/A and the Maine Heritage Weavers on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Class will begin Tuesday, Sept. 4, for six weeks.

“Beginner Strip Quilting” will allows students to use their own sewing machine to make a country lanes style twin-sized quilt. The five-week class will start Monday, Sept. 10.

“Knitting for the Intermediate to Advanced” is an eight-week program taught by Jane Footer-Cole. The class allows students to expand their fundamental knitting skills to complete a handmade project prior to the holidays. Class will begin Wednesday, Sept. 5.

“Rug Braiding I and Rug Braiding II” will be facilitated by Beth Derenburger. In the six-week classes, participants will gain the experience and know-how to create at least one braided wool area rug. Designs increase in complexity with experience. Classes will begin on Sept. 4 and 5.

“Scrapbooking I and II” are one-night programs facilitated by Dawn Hartill. Students will begin with the fundamentals and have the opportunity to expand skills and embellish their designs. Classes are scheduled for Sept. 18 and 27.
