OXFORD – American Legion Post 112 has had a very rewarding year in keeping its commitment to help make the community and America a better place to live, said Commander Al Healey, in reviewing events it has been involved with this year.
The post is the charter organization for both Boy Scout and Cub Scout Pack 196, Healey noted, adding that 21 adult-trained Scout leaders were recognized for the advancement of the scouting programs with the American Legion’s citation of appreciation.
“The Scouts are a very important part of the Post, from supporting us in Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day parades to acting as waiters at our meeting night suppers,” said Healey.
The Scouts also help in maintaining the grounds at Veterans Memorial Park.
The post home is used as a meeting place for both the troop and pack and serves as a race place for the Pinewood Derby. The troop and Girl Scouts have used it for pancake breakfasts and as a cookie station. In return, the Scouts help the post with a community service project of collecting all unserviceable public, private and graveside American flags for a proper disposal ceremony by the post’s sergeant-at-arms.
“The summer is marked by a series of outdoor events, open to the public, and held in our post Memorial Park,” said Healey. The theme of the free concerts is to entertain with different music and groups.
Special attention will be given to veterans from the South Paris Veterans Home, who will receive “front row seats,” he said.
Post 112 is a sponsor of the Oxford Hills American Legion Baseball team with Bessey Motors both equally participating in the American Legion oratorical program as well as Boys’ State and Girls’ State. A baseball field is maintained on post grounds to enhance and support the town’s Little League program.
“The auxiliary unit of the post has a project honoring both living and deceased veterans in town during the Christmas season. Tree lighting and ceremonies include the town choir and Scouts, even a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus for the little ones,” Healey noted.
“Within our town we have provided a lot of support to several families who have been traumatized by fire, illness, unemployment,” he said. “We gave support to our fire department, police, and EMT with the Officer of the Year program.”
“We are proud of our commitment to uphold the principles, and carry forth the programs of the American Legion and our membership in the American Legion and Auxiliary.”
