RUMFORD – Super sleuths and daring detectives are invited to join the “Get a Clue @ Your Library” summer reading program at the Rumford Public Library. The program is open to young people of all abilities, from preschool through age 14.

Summer reading programs encourage young readers to explore the world of books. Whether one chooses to read mysteries or opts to read nonfiction to learn about the mysteries of animals, space, the natural world or anything else he or she may be interested in knowing about, the library is the place to go to find those clues.

Reading during the summer helps children maintain and enhance their reading and comprehension skills and their vocabulary. As well, younger children develop a positive, enthusiastic attitude toward learning to read when they are read to regularly.

Again this year, Subway, Scoops, BIG Adventure Center, the Portland Sea Dogs and Old Fort Western in Augusta are working with the library to add incentives.

Children are asked to read at least five days a week for a length of time based upon the child’s age. (Pre-readers may be read to by a parent, older sibling or other caregiver.)

Participants in the program will have four weeks, from Sunday, June 24, through Saturday, July 21, to meet their reading goals. Each week that a reader meets the appropriate goal, s/he will receive a coupon for a sandwich at Subway.

Readers who meet the goal all four weeks will receive certificates for a treat at Scoops and a half-day of fun at BIG Adventure Center in Bethel. The Summer Reading Awards Celebration for those who participated in the program will take place on Wednesday, July 25

Those meeting the reading goal and turning in a completed reading log in either of the first two weeks will qualify for a voucher for a ticket to a Portland Sea Dogs game. The game this year is against the Connecticut Defenders (Giants affiliate) at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 29.

Old Fort Western in Augusta is admitting to their historical site all participants in summer reading programs, free, when they present verification from their library. Anyone accompanying the reader will be admitted at $1 off regular rates. Visit the Web site at www.oldfortwestern.org to see the summer schedule.

More information on the reading program, and the tracking sheets to record time spent reading, are available in the children’s room. The calendar of events for the library’s four-week summer fest daily activity program, which begins Monday, July 2, is also available in the children’s room.
