FARMINGTON – Nearly everyone in Maine has been affected by cancer, either through their own personal experience or that of a friend or loved one.

Because of the nearly universal connection, Sugarloaf is joining the fight against cancer through a signature fundraising event, the Sugarloaf Charity Summit.

Fifty percent of the proceeds of the Charity Summit, happening on Saturday, Jan. 20, will go to the Maine Cancer Foundation and 50 percent will benefit Franklin Memorial Hospital’s Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center. More than $154,000 was raised during last year’s event.

The Maine Cancer Foundation provides funding for scientific cancer research, professional and public education and patient support programs throughout Maine, and the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center provides area women with access to state-of-the-art screening, diagnostic, clinical and care-support services.

In an effort to support the fundraiser, Franklin Memorial Hospital is hosting a radiothon from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, on WKTJ 99.3 FM. The purpose is to support the efforts of the Sugarloaf Charity Summit by taking contributions from callers.

Maureen Goudreau, FCHN development director, said, “The single largest source of funding for breast cancer support and awareness in Maine is support from individuals.”

During the radiothon, WKTJ will interview key people associated with the Charity Summit, as well as the breast care center and the Webber family. Updates on the amount raised will also be announced throughout.
