AUBURN – The Sylvan Learning Centers in Bangor, South Portland, Auburn and Augusta are giving back to the community and counties in which they are located. The centers will give more than $20,000 in teacher grants and awards for writing contests this school year.

Sylvan’s Exceptional Teacher Award is a $250 award to be given each month from each center and used for classroom supplies. The grant will be based on the uniqueness of a specific program, lesson or the expressed need for classroom materials that will support a specific lesson.

The grant is to reward the special teachers and encourage them to continue inspiring students to learn and do their best. Applications are available at schools.

Sylvan’s community essay contest is for three age categories, grades four and five, grades six to eight and grades nine to 12. There will be $400, $200 and $100 cash prizes awarded to the winners in each group. Essay topics are listed on the entry form and can be picked up at the school or at www.educate.com and click on the local center by zip code.
