Forum on flu
SOUTH HIRAM – A pandemic influenza community forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at South Hiram Elementary School, 213 South Hiram Road. There will be a panel of local and state level experts available to answer questions. In addition, there will be handouts and brochures that focus on flu preparedness. Flea market
OXFORD – A flea market will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Oxford County Fairgrounds, Route 26. There are inside and outside spaces available. Proceeds will benefit the agricultural museum at the fair. To make reservations or for more information, call 743-8422.
Ensemble to show
PARIS – The Paris Department of Parks and Recreation has announced that Waterford-based Vocal Solution, an a cappella ensemble, will perform from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, in the Moore Park gazebo.
Admission is free. Those attending are invited to bring a lawn chair or blanket and a picnic. In case of rain, the event will be at the First Congregational Church, across from the Mildred M. Fox Elementary School. For more information, contact the recreation director at 743-2501.
Knitters to meet
PARIS – The Western Maine Knitting Guild will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the First Congregational Church, 17 East Main St. The speaker will be Gab Woolley from the Irish Ewe Shop in Norway. Church meeting
WEST PARIS – The West Paris Baptist Church held its quarterly business meeting at the church July 19 with 12 members present. Wayne and Nancy Penley have completed the handicapped zones in the parking lot. Cheryl Broberg and Jean Tyner will buy new offering plates. Several other projects have been completed. There are many hymnals to be given to anyone interested. The next quarterly meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18.
Yard, bake sale
WEST PARIS – The West Paris Historical Society will hold its regular yard and bake sale from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12. The society is in need of more clean resalable items. For more information or to arrange for home pick-up, call Betty Jones at 647-2507 or David Ring at 743-6733.
Society meets
PARIS – The Paris Cape Historical Society met July 20 at the museum, 77 High St. The resignation of Cynthia Immonen as secretary was accepted. She has given many years of service to the society. Marilyn Jones was elected to take her place.
Speaker was Leon Truman, who discussed the history and activities of the Norway-Paris Fish and Game. The museum is open every Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Daughters meet
EAST STONEHAM – The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Hannah F. Richardson Tent 19, met July 19 at the K of P Hall. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 27, when a supper will be held at 6 p.m. in the East Stoneham Church vestry followed by inspection of the tent.
The Bryant Pond and Norway tents will be invited, also the Sons of Union Veterans. A silent auction will be held and those planning to attend are asked to bring an article to be auctioned.
Benefit barbecue
AUBURN – Members of the local Modern Woodmen of America camp (chapter) will sponsor a fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 12, to benefit the Oxford Station House Complex, 223 King St.
Plans include a chicken barbecue from noon to 2 p.m., $8; duck race, 2 p.m., $10; combo, $15. The money raised will be matched by Modern Woodmen’s home office, up to $2,500, through the fraternal benefit society’s matching fund program and will be used to build four adult and three junior horseshoe courts.
The matching fund program offers Modern Woodmen members nationwide the chance to support a community cause, organization or individual. For more information, contact Deborah Wageman at 783-8804.
