There have been many changes throughout the years that have had an impact on teenagers’ lifestyles, and then there are things that will never change. There are things that we have experienced during our teenage years that have changed our world and outlook forever – such as 9/11, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. We all know that these have had a big effect on how people look at the world.
These changes aren’t necessarily because of the children, but it has a big effect on how people around them act, such as their role models. For example, take a look at a child whose parents have had trouble throughout their whole relationship and haven’t given their child quite as much attention that is required, compared to a child whose parents have had a really good relationship and have been there for their child every step of the way. Which one do you think would have a better outlook on life and would see things in a more positive way? Another thing is that no matter how you look at it, the world has never been nor will it be, the same any year. Each year changes, and all of us are faced with different challenges or with different responsibilities, which in the long run will change us.
In her diary, Anne Frank wrote, “Parents can only lead their children or point them in the right direction.” The whole part of being a teenager is independence. Teenagers will be making their own decisions and choose their own paths. And as hard as it is, parents have to allow it and let them explore, because part of life is learning from your mistakes.
Writing in Time Magazine a few years ago, Nancy Gibbs noted that teens “demand more respect from their parents and give them less.” The minute teenagers become of age they think they know everything and won’t give up on it. It’s something all parents will go through.
Even though during the teenage years there are so many arguments, disagreements, and differences between the parents and the children, the thing that will never change is how they feel about each other. They will love each other no matter what goes on between them.
