LEWISTON – Twelve local residents received bachelor’s degrees during Bates College’s 140th commencement ceremony on May 28.
Carrabassett: Thomas Sawyer Fahy graduated with a bachelor of science degree in physics. He was on the men’s varsity alpine skiing team. A 2002 graduate of Mt. Abram Regional High School, Salem, he is the son of Thomas and Faron Daub Fahy.
Farmington: Hillary E. Smith graduated maga cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in biology. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and a dean’s list student, she spent her junior year studying at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and in Zanzibar, Tanzania. A 2002 graduate of Mt. Blue High School, she is the daughter of Alden and Diane Smith.
Fryeburg: Mitchell Andrew Cote-Crosskill graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in history. He is a dean’s list student. A 2002 graduate of Fryeburg Academy, he is the son of Scot and Nicole Cote-Crosskill.
Fryeburg: Chelsea Anne Tryder graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. She was a member of the women’s varsity cross country track and Nordic ski teams. She received community work-study awards in fall 2002 and spring 2003. In winter 2004, she received the Arthur Crafts Service Award for her volunteer work with the Maine Campus Compact Leadership Team focused on issues of hunger in Maine.
A participant in the Modern Dance Co.’s fall 2004 concert, she spent the fall semester of her senior year at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina. A 2002 graduate of Fryeburg Academy, she is the daughter of Charles and Tracy Tryder.
Greene: Melissa Ann Simones graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. Presenting research at the 2006 Mount David Summit, the college’s annual celebration of student academic achievement, she spent the fall semester of her junior year in Germany.
Simones is a member of the College Key, awarded on the basis of academic standing, character, campus and community service, leadership and future promise. A 2002 graduate of Leavitt Area High School, she is the daughter of James G. and Linda D. M. Simones.
Hebron: Abigaile McLaughlin King graduated with a bachelor of science degree in English. A dean’s list student, she was a member of the sailing club. She spent the fall semester of her junior year at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durbin, South Africa. A 2002 graduate of the Taft School, she is the daughter of John and Marcia King.
Kingfield: John Patrick Ritzo graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy. A dean’s list student, he participated in the 2003 Bates theater production of “Lady Windermere’s Fan.” A member of the men’s varsity alpine skiing team, he spent the fall semester of his junior year in Prague, Czech Republic. A 2002 graduate of Carrabassett Valley Academy, he is the son of John and Patricia Ritzo.
Paris: Kyla Rose Decato graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in American cultural studies. She played on the softball and women’s varsity basketball teams for four years. A 2002 graduate of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, she is the daughter of Richard and Debbie Decato.
Phillips: Marina Claire Langdon graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. A dean’s list student, she was in the 2003 Bates theater production of “Lady Windermere’s Fan.” A 2002 graduate of Mt Abram High School, she is the daughter of Edward H. and Jadwiga S. Langdon.
Poland: Joel Anthony LeBel graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy. He is a dean’s list student. A 2002 graduate of Poland Regional High School, he is the son of Steve LeBel and Rachel LeBel.
Turner: Jonathan Ward Duchette graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in geology. A College Key holder, awarded on the basis of academic standing, character, campus and community service, leadership, and future promise, he received the Harold Norris Goodspeed Jr. Class of 1940 Award, presented for his outstanding work in the Outing Club.
Duchette is a member of Sigma Xi, the national scientific honors research society. A member of the football team and the Outing Club council, he presented research at the 2006 Mount David summit, the college’s annual celebration of student academic achievement. A 2002 graduate of Leavitt Area High School, he is the son of Lawrence and Constance Duchette.
Wilton: Machias William Schoen graduated with a bachelor of science degree in environmental studies. A 2002 graduate of Mt. Blue High School, he is the son of John and Patty Schoen.
