LEWISTON – The Lewiston Recreation and Parks Department is offering numerous summer activities for children and youth. The offerings are outlined below:

Summer Track and Field: The program is for youth ages 5 to 16. Training and implementation in the fundamentals of track and field will be offered with age-appropriate events available, to include hurdles; pole vault; the long, triple and high jumps; shot-put; discus; race walk; and all running and relay races. Skills will be utilized in weekly track and field meets in competition with teams such as Augusta, Waterville and Jay.

The eight-week program will run through Aug. 10, with practices scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at Franklin Pasture Athletic Complex. A state meet will be held on Aug. 12 for qualifying individuals. The registration fee is $37 for residents and $47 for non-residents, both to include a track shirt.

Kevin Russell, former runner for the University of Maryland and member of the Greater Boston Track Club, will serve as program director, and Ray Putnam will serve as program coach. Putnam, head coach of the Lewiston High School cross country indoor and outdoor track and field programs, led his team to a regional championship in cross country, KVAC championships and a second-place finish at the indoor state championship meet. Putnam also recently led his team to the outdoor state championship title.

Summer playground sites: The following playground sites will be open from mid-June through mid-August: Lionel Potvin Park, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; River Valley Village, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon; Hillview Center, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At all playgrounds, the Lewiston school nutrition program will provide breakfast and lunch.

Co-Ed Summer Basketball Program: The program, for children ages 4 to 8, is scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 6 through Aug. 3. Group I, ages 4 to 6, will meet from 5:15 to 6 p.m., and Group II, ages 7 and 8, will meet from 6:15 to 7 p.m.

Instructors will guide the players through several skills and drills and emphasize the finer points of the game. The fee for residents is $30 a person; non-residents, $40. Registration may be made prior to July 6 at the Lewiston Recreation Office, 65 Central Ave., between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Camp Smiles: Camp Smiles opened on June 21 and will run through Aug. 11. Ages 5 to 12 are welcome to attend at the Lewiston Memorial Armory, 65 Central Ave. The camp operates Monday through Friday, with drop-off between from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and pickup between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Registration, which is $100 a camper a week, is on a first-come, first-serve paid basis, with the first and last week paid upon registration (TOPS accepted).

Summer Play Days Program: Summer Play Days began June 21 at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St., and will run through Aug. 11. The program will operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided through the Lewiston School Nutrition Program.

Youth in the program will also participate in Wednesdays in the Park, field trips, trips to Kennedy Pool and trips to the Lewiston Public Library. Nichole Gendron will serve as program director.

Summer Aquatics: Supervised summer aquatic programs will be held at Kennedy Park Pool, Park Street. The pool will be open from mid-June through mid-August weekdays 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. On weekends and holidays, the pool will be open from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.
