LEWISTON – In early July, a group of teens from the United Baptist Church will be heading to Appalachia, the town of Bledsoe, Ky., to help run a children’s program and vacation Bible school.
That area of eastern Kentucky is economically depressed and struggling, and to make matters worse, has recently experienced a number of mining accidents. One accident a few weeks ago, which resulted in the death of five miners, was in Harlin County, where Bledsoe is located.
A small church there requested a group to go in early July to hold a programs for the children of the community. For the last three months, the teens have been preparing for the mission and are ready with skits, games, crafts, stories, songs and Bible lessons.
Although Bledsoe is only a little over 1,000 miles away, the team realizes that life in a small town in the mountains of Kentucky will be a lot different from life in Lewiston, and the teens are excited about the opportunity to serve.
When they return, they will hold the same program at the United Baptist Church, 250 Main St. It is for all children in kindergarten through sixth grade and will run from 9 a.m. to noon July 17 to 21.
For more information or to register, call 782-0821. During the course of that week here, the teens will share some experiences from their days in Appalachia.
